Chapter – 12 Length (Part-1)

• Length of an object denotes how long an object is.

• Standard unit of length is metre and it is denoted as ‘m’.

Units of Length
Metre
The standard unit of length is metre. It is denoted as ‘m’. Height
of a wall , pole , fabric etc are measured in metres.

Centimetres
It is the smaller unit of length and is denoted as ‘cm’. Length of
pencil , pen , ruler , paper can easily be measured in cm.

Kilometre
Kilometre is the bigger unit of length and is denoted as ‘km’.
Distance between two villages , towns or cities are measured in
kilometre .

Tools for Measuring Length

• Smaller lengths are measured by ruler

To measure the length of an object we keep the tip of the object

at 0 and mark and find the mark on ruler that matches with the
end point of the object. This gives the length of the object.
• Measuring tape is also used to measure lengths in day to day
life. Carpenters , tailors etc all use measuring tapes to measure
the length.

• Metre rod : When you visit a shop to buy ribbons, fabrics the
shopkeeper uses a rod called metre rod to measure the length.

Conversion of Length
1 m = 100 cm
1 km = 1000 m
• To convert metres into centimetres multiply the value in metres
by 100.
For example : 7 m = 7 x 100 = 700 cm
9 m = 9 x 100 = 900 cm
8m 72cm = (8x100)cm + 72 cm = 872 cm

• To convert kilometres into metres , multiply the value in

kilometres by 1000.
For example : 5 km = 5 x 1000 = 5000 m
6 km = 6 x 1000 = 6000 m
8 km 70 m = ( 8 x 1000 ) m + 70 m
= 8000 m + 70 m = 8070 m

• To convert metres into kilometres and

metres , separate the thousands and write
the answer .
( 1000m = 1 km )

For example :- 5008 m = 5000m + 8m =

5 km 8 m
7926 m = 7000m + 926m = 7 km 926 m
2075 m = 2000 m + 75 m = 2 km 75 m

• To convert centimetres into metres and

centimetres separate the hundreds and
write the answer.
( 100 cm = 1m )

For example :- 625 cm = 600 cm + 25 cm

= 6m 25 cm.
1925 cm = 1900 cm + 25 cm
=19 m 25 cm

1. Circle the suitable unit to measure the following.

a) Length of a mobile phone m cm km
b) Length of your notebook m cm km
c) Height of school building m cm km
d) Length of a river m cm km
e) Distance between two cities m cm km

2. Convert the following into centimetres

a) 5 m
1 m = 100 cm
5 m = 5 x 100
= 500 cm

b) 12 m
1 m = 100 cm
12 m = 12 x 100
= 1200 cm

c) 9 m
1 m = 100 cm
9 m = 9 x 100
= 900 cm

d) 193 m
1 m = 100 cm
193 m = 193 x 100
= 19300 cm

3) Convert the following into centimetres

a) 3m 85 cm 1m = 100 cm
= (3 x 100) cm + 85 cm
= 300 cm + 85 cm
= 385 cm
b) 75 m 5 cm 1m = 100 cm
= (75 x 100) cm + 5 cm
= 7500 cm + 5 cm
= 7505 cm

c) 88 m 88 cm 1m = 100 cm
= (88 x 100) cm + 88 cm
= 8800 cm + 88 cm
= 8888 cm

d) 3 m 15 cm 1m = 100 cm
= (3 x 100) cm + 15 cm
= 300 cm + 15 cm
= 315 cm

e) 14 m 20 cm 1m = 100 cm
= (14 x 100) cm + 20 cm
= 1400 cm + 20 cm
= 1420 cm

f) 90 m 35 cm 1m = 100 cm
= (90 x 100) cm + 35 cm
= 9000 cm + 35 cm
= 9035 cm

g) 16 m 16 cm 1m = 100 cm
= (16 x 100) cm + 16 cm
= 1600 cm + 16 cm
