Exercise 1-Activity 1
Physical Basis of Heredity
ACTIVITY SHEET

Activity 1
Result of the slide preparation and viewing of samples is shown below:

Onion (Allium cepa) root tip stained with acetocarmine viewed under a student microscope.

Encircle the cell and label the specific stage in mitosis it displays. Identify as many as you can with a
minimum of four cells each of which should represent a different stage.

Exercise 1: Physical Basis of Heredity BIO 30. Genetics

Figure 3. Grasshopper testis with differential staining and viewed under a microscope.

Encircle the cell and label the specific stage in meiosis it displays. Identify as many as you can with
a minimum of two cells representing different stages. Make sure to specify whether the stage
belongs to meiosis I or II. If you identify a cell at prophase I, then specify the substage.

a. What type of cell (somatic and/or gametic) is observed using the onion root tip?

b. Between Mitosis and Meiosis, what type do you expect to see in onion root tip? Why?

c. What type of cell (somatic and/or gametic) is observed using the grasshopper testis?

d. Between Mitosis and Meiosis, what type do you expect to see in grasshopper testis? Why?

Physical Basis of Heredity
ACTIVITY SHEET

Activity 2 Wire Models for Cell Division

1. Mitosis
Label the chromosomes at metaphase. Identify the types of chromosomes in the genome. Give the chromosome
number and chromosome composition of the cell.

In terms of chromosome composition, are the two daughter cells identical?

Are the two daughter cells identical to the parental cell?

If so, cite three ways in which daughter cells and their parental cell are identical.

Exercise 1: Physical Basis of Heredity BIO 30. Genetics

1.
2.
3.

What events in interphase and in the division stage of the cell cycle are responsible for this? Explain.

2. Meiosis
Using the same set of wires, pair up homologous chromosomes. What stage is this?

Assume crossing over between non-sister chromatids. Use blue wires with a pink segment at the tip and pink
wires with a blue segment at the tip to indicate crossed over regions. At what stage does this occur? Label the
chromosomes showing interchanged segments. The labels and chromosome composition must reflect the
presence of crossed over regions whenever applicable.

What is the significance of crossing over?

Draw and label the chromosomes at metaphase I within a cell. The labels and chromosome composition
must reflect the presence of crossed over regions whenever applicable. Include any structure(s) which will
help show that the cell is undergoing metaphase I.
