PROBLEM SET 2

1. (15 checks) A soybean breeder is aiming to breed for early maturation. He was able to cross variety A which
has desirable agronomic characteristics but late maturation with variety B which has less-than-ideal
agronomic characteristics but early maturation. In addition to the F 1 population, F2 and BC1 population were
also generated. The variances for each population are presented below.

Population P1 P2 F1 F2 BC1

Variance 3.3 days2 4.7 days2 6.6 days2 19.2 days2 12.1 days2

a) Given the variances from these specific populations, compute for the broad sense and the narrow sense
heritability values. Express your final answers in percentage with one decimal place. Show complete solutions
and box or highlight your final answers.

b) Based on the data from this experiment, will you recommend putting in effort to breed for early maturation
in soybean? Justify your answer by citing and interpreting the relevant heritability value(s).

c) If no genetic variation was observed within a particular population for a given trait, what will be the
computed broad sense heritability value for the trait in the population? Show solution to justify your answer.

d) Please refer to the table above. If only data on the variances for F 1, F2 and BC1 populations were available,
how will the broad sense heritability estimate change? Show solutions.

d. If the proband (III-2) marries a heterozygous woman, what is the probability that they will have a
heterozygous daughter? If this same couple has a son, what is the probability that he will be affected?
