In some countries around the world, people can’t legally drink alcoholic

beverages until they are twenty – one years old. In my opinion, the
drinking age should be lowered to eighteen due to the following reasons.

First of all, lowering the drinking age can decrease alcoholic beverages
use in unsafe areas. The minimum legal drinking age does not prevent
college students from drinking, but instead forces them off campus and
into risky drinking environment such as on the street or in some
stranger’s house. This because teenagers do not want to be caught
drinking illegally and fined. The lower age limit will promote drinking in
more responsible environments such as bars, pubs or restaurants.

Secondly, it helps restrict dangerous drinking activities. When not being

prohibited drinking, college students can drink whenever they want. This
will normalize responsible drinking habits and reduce the risk of
underage teenagers’ binge drinking which can do harm to youngers’
health. A study in Harvard found that although minimum Canada drink
age is 18, binge drink rate of Canada teenagers is lower than that of
America ones who are limited drinking age in 21 (35% and 41%
respectively).

Last but not least, it is good for economic. Since more people are allowed
to drink in bars and restaurants, it increases revenues for private business
owners as well as tax revenue for the government. This also leads to the
expansion of drink business in order to meet consumers’ demand. To
increase production, businesses hire more workers or invest capital to
improve their physical infrastructure and operations. Gradually, corporate
profits begin to rise along with stock prices. That is the sign of growth
economy.
In conclusion, lowering the drinking age brings a lot of benefits in term of
both individual and social. Therefore, the drinking age should be lowered
to eighteen.
