Introduction:

NSTP students should not only be aware of the issues confronting society
today, particularly those affecting the community to which they belong. They should
be aware enough to contribute in their own small way to resolving the
aforementioned social problem. As a result, there is a need to integrate volunteerism
into all aspects of the NSTP. The highest form of community service is the free will of
volunteering oneself to solve problems in the community to which they belong.

With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits
of volunteering can be enormous. Volunteering offers vital help to people in need,
worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you,
the volunteer. The right match can help you to find friends, connect with the
community,learn new skills.

Lesson Proper:

“VOLUNTEERISM” refers to an act involving a wide range of activities,

including traditional forms of mutual aid and developmental interventions that
provides an enabling and empowering environment both on the part of the
beneficiary receiving and the volunteer rendering the act, undertaken for reasons
arising from socio developmental, business or corporate orientation,
commitment or conviction for the attainment of the public good and where monetary
and other incentives or reward are not the primary motivating factors.
“VOLUNTEER” refers to an individual or group who for reasons arising from
their socio developmental, business and corporate orientation, commitment or
conviction, contribute time, service and resources whether on full-time or part-time
basis to a just and essential social development cause, mission or endeavor in the
belief that their activity is mutually meaningful and beneficial to public interest as well
as to themselves.
“VOLUNTEER SERVICE ORGANIZATION” refers to a local or foreign group
that recruits, trains, deploys and supports volunteer workers to programs and
projects implemented by them or by other organizations or any group that provides
services and resources, including but not limited to, information, capability building,
advocacy and networking for the attainment of the common good.
“VOLUNTARY SECTOR” refers to those sectors of Philippine society that
organizes themselves into volunteers to take advocacy and action primarily for local
and national development as well as international cooperation and understanding.

In the Philippines, Republic Act 9418 or The Volunteer Act of 2007 provides
this definition of volunteerism which is formulated in consideration of universal tenets
as well as the Philippine perspective and experience in volunteer service.

To provide a policy framework on volunteerism that shall underscore the

fundamental principles necessary to harness and harmonize the broad and diverse
efforts of the voluntary sector in the country into an integrative and effective
partnership for local and national development as well as international cooperation
and understanding.

Key principles of volunteerism:

1. Free will- The decision to volunteer may be influenced by peer pressure or

personal feelings of obligation to society but, in essence, the individual must
be in a position to choose whether or not to volunteer.
2. No financial gain- It is not undertaken primarily for financial gain. Because
voluntary action is not rewarded with a wage or salary, it is generally cost-
effective, although not cost-free.
3. Benefit to others- Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and
make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a
real difference to the lives of people, animals, and organizations in need.

Reasons to Volunteer

1. To share and to help- they want to help the people, especially those who are
in need. They want to share with the people what they are doing because they
want to encourage people to do the same thing, and they want to give
inspiration and hope to other people.

2. To be part of or to belong to society- volunteers want to be a part of society

because they want to influence people, and they want to see how people see
their influence.

3. To learn - volunteering is not always about helping and giving, you can also
learn valuable lessons and experiences you can carry with you through your
career and life from different peoples.

Why is there a law about volunteerism? Even if voluntary is not to be

forced yet it is an initiative as a social value to help others and maintain a
secure society.

We have a Republic act 9418, entitled “An Act Institutionalizing A

Strategy for Rural Development, Strengthening Volunteerism and for Other
Purposes” otherwise known as “Volunteer Act of 2007.” signed by our former
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The objectives of the Volunteer Act of 2007.

•To provide an enabling environment and promote a common development

agenda in the spirit of Volunteerism wherein volunteers can equip skills and
communication skills which can help a different sector to achieve growth of a
society that they wanted to help.

As well as giving highlights of a multi-sectoral approach. First, a major

stakeholders specifically, Government, local and international sector, and
volunteers should recognized and promote the inclusivity and it can achieve it
if there is a unity between sectors. Second, a law wanted to connect the local
and international organization to fully achieve the common goals with the help
of shared ideas and resources that both needs, doing that communicating it
could help strengthening their goals for the same results. And also, even there
is a volunteers in a certain organization it should be collaborated in other
corporation to maintain and reach the same purpose which is to help the
society.

Under these Republic Act 9418.We have a Modalities of Volunteerism

in the country. A volunteerism for Development includes;

A Not-for-profit Organization. It is organized and operates for a certain

purpose rather than gaining profit. An Academe. The school sets an academic
seat of learning, research, and idealism where students are introduced to the
extent of Volunteerism.
International volunteer organization. They will share skills and
contribute to capacity development in the local organization
Corporate sector. It allows a certain business to elaborate and secure the
relationship between the community members.

And the Government. It is responsible to recognize a certain pattern and acts

to help different sectors and organizations in achieving development.

✓A Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency PNVSCA was

created under Executive Order No. 134.

An PNVSCA function is to review and provide policies and guidelines
regarding the national volunteer service program. And also, establishes
and maintains a national network of volunteer organizations and serves as
liaison between and among locals.

It simply takes the implementation of the Volunteer Act of 2007 and envisions
a Volunteerism as an action to have a progressive country.

Guidelines for Student Volunteers

Just imagine that I am one of the representatives of community service here

in our school; maybe all of us can be a representative of our school when it
comes to community service. Of course we are representatives, we need to
be responsible, and we need to act properly. It is also appropriate that we
wear a proper uniform and follow the rules and regulations of our barangay.
And of course, we also need to arrive at our location on time.

The following are the Guidelines for Student Volunteers:

1. Appearance- As volunteers it is crucial that we dress appropriately in order

to be more presentable and look decent. While performing community service,
College of Industrial Technology - URS Morong
wearing only clothes from your home is not allowed. Someone assigned us
uniforms so that we could be easily identified.

2. Accountability- As a student volunteer, you take responsibility for your

actions while performing your duty as a community service volunteer. This
includes the passing of reports or activities being done. Will be responsible for
passing the Task. Because this is one of the requirements before completing
the course.

3. Benefits- There are several advantages to volunteering for a community

service project in our barangay or at our school. This project will be helpful to
many people. We can apply our communicative, strategic, and decision-
making skills. The sense of personal efficacy and self-esteem among NSTP
students can be raised by volunteering.
