Introduction
This paper examines how the world's view of the teaching profession has
changed over time. The report examines the world's view of the teaching
profession in the past (then) and then compares it with the world's current view
of the teaching profession. In addition, the paper will also examine one element
of the teaching profession that should become a norm and what should be
done in the here and now for this to come to fruition.
Changing view of the teaching profession
The view of the teaching profession has undergone significant changes over
time. Then, Teaching was considered a low-paying, low-status job often
reserved for women. Teachers were expected to be strict disciplinarians and
often used physical punishment to maintain order in the classroom (Will,2019).
However, Teaching is currently recognized as an essential and highly skilled
profession that plays a crucial role in shaping the future of society. Teachers
must now have advanced degrees and certifications, and their pay and status
have improved in many countries (Will,2019).
Moreover, in the past, Teaching was often viewed as a one-size-fits-all
profession, with all teachers using the same methods and curriculum. Students
were expected to conform to the teacher's expectations rather than the teacher
adapting to the needs of the students. Currently, Teachers are expected to be
able to adjust their teaching methods and curriculum to the individual needs of
their students. There is a greater emphasis on personalized learning and
differentiated instruction.
In the past, Teaching primarily focused on rote memorization and drill-and-
practice exercises. Creativity and critical thinking were not valued as they are
today.b A lot has changed as there is a greater emphasis on teaching critical
thinking and problem-solving skills. Many schools have also started

incorporating technology to enhance learning opportunities (Will,2019).

Teaching was also often seen as a solitary profession, with teachers working in
isolation from their colleagues. Currently, collaboration and teamwork are
emphasized in many schools, with teachers working together to develop and
implement curriculum, share best practices, and support one another.
One element of the teaching profession I would like to see as the norm is a
greater emphasis on student well-being and mental health. For this to come to
fruition, Teachers need to receive more training on identifying and addressing
mental health issues in their students. This could include professional
development in trauma-informed Teaching, mindfulness practices, and social-
emotional learning (Seifert and Sutton,2019). Moreover, schools must provide
teachers with the resources to support students' mental health. This could
include access to school counselors, psychologists, and other mental health
professionals and funding for mental health programs and initiatives.
It is also essential for schools to foster a culture of support and care for
students' mental health. This could involve implementing policies and
practices prioritizing student well-being and providing teachers with the
support they need to address classroom mental health concerns. Lastly,
teachers must work collaboratively with other professionals, such as mental
health experts and community organizations, to ensure students receive the
support they need (Seifert and Sutton,2019).
