(1)
Shear Wall Structures

The given figure shows a plan of a building having a height of H above the
foundation level. The building is located in Egypt in a region of high-seismic action.
The thickness of each wall equals (tw) mm. The earthquake load acting in the X-
direction equals to Ex kN (ultimate value) and that acting in the Y-Direction equals to
EY kN. It is required to:
1. Distribute the earthquake load acting in the X-direction among the resisting
elements.
2. Distribute the earthquake load acting in the Y-direction among the resisting
elements.
l.

Note: (It shall be assumed that Ex and Ey act simultaneously).

You should submit detailed calculations. It is required also to prepare the final answer
in a table as shown.

Question 2:
Figure (1) shows the structural plan of 4x x 3Y m Type building in City , slab
floor system with ts cm slab thickness supporting on the given concrete walls and
column. The building lies at Earthquake zone ? in Egypt (i.e. peak ground
acceleration ) in a type soil (soil type: ?). the building total height of above founda-
tion is 49 m (floor height = 3.5 m) All shear walls W1 having 30 x 300 cm,
C1= 80*80 cm as shown in figure. The live load= 400.0 Kg/m2, Floor cover =200 Kg/m2,
brick walls =150 Kg/m2, fcu = 350 kg/cm2 & f y= 4000 kg/cm2
Using horizontal design spectrum for elastic analysis in earthquake design, it is
required to:
1) Determine the base shear force in both directions (X-X, Y-Y) and its distribution
along building height.
2) Calculate the maximum moment and shear in each wall including torsion effect.
3) Calculate the wind load acting on building at each floor in both directions

direction.
2) Calculate the seismic load acting on building at each floor in Y-Y,
X-X direction.
3) Calculate the moments at the base level and shear for the frames
