ENTE KOCHI DESIGN COMPETITION:

DESIGN VISION:
 WALKABILITY
 Based on the data given by the authorities, are they indirectly
intending for an intervention which is favouring pedestrians and
bicycle users?
 The stretch of the canal is 1.3km from Marine drive in the West to
Perandoor canal in the East. This stretch is linked to 3 major
transportation modes – 1) Ernakulam boat jetty,Maharaja Metro station
and 3) KSRTC bus terminus.So clearly this area can act as a stretch
which can be directed to various important places and with a fast
changing character across the stretch ( which can be considered as a
design advantage)
Say the 3 transportation nodes, Jewish cemetery, Marine drive,
Priyadharshini park, various institutions, play grounds, major busy
shopping streets.
 Can it be developed into a walkable street running alongside the
canal –pedestrians, bicyclers

 PLACEMAKING
 Can Mullasery canal be developed as an historical and cultural
narrative?
-Earlier times, Canals were used for inland navigation. Water being an
integral part of Kochi culture, most day today activities happened on
the banks of the canal in the past. Selling of goods, group gathering,
and literary discussions used to happen on the banks of the canal.
Over the years, the more accessible water became through various
distribution systems, change in transportation facilities etc., water lost its
importance.
Eventually became dumping yards and Open sewer drains. So is it
possible to bring back the activities as it was in the past with respect to
the present scenario?
Suggestions:
 Identify potential areas for evening markets in water …
 Are there Potential areas for developing mini stepped Ghats – to
access water? ( as long as water can be accessed physically, a sense
of belonging and awareness can be developed)
 Can such group gatherings which used to happen in the past on the
banks of Water be revived for various literary discussions…performing
arts..etc?
 ENTE KOCHI DESIGN COMPETITION:

 FISHING:
 Fishing is an integral part of the people’s life in Kochi. Can the canal be
used for fish culture – also associated to it to promote fishing as an
entertainment activity?
 Identify areas around canal for promoting the same?

 FLOODING ISSUES:
 Water logging issues are seen at Subsite A- Is it possible to drain the
water in these areas to the neighbouring wetlands? – (all the areas
around Kochi wetlands were saved from floods as the wetlands act as
a large water reservoir)
-Need to know the tidal levels
-Nearby Wetland water levels
-Backflow from Vembanad Lake

 MANAGEMENT ISSUES
 We will have to assume that MANAGEMENT ISSUES like waste disposal,
sewer drains opening into the canal ,clogged drains will all be resolved

Based on all the above said design vision; the entire canal stretch should be divided
based on these interventions.
