Method Statements Plumbing Work

Task Description
This method statement describes the work process for general plumbing
and plumbing maintenance work.

Preparation

1) Report to site office and inform site manager of arrival, collect


permit to work where required.
2) Attend any induction as required by the principal contractor or building
manager.
3) Put on your personal protective equipment.
4) Take tools and equipment to the work area.
5) Cordon off work area if required to do so.
6) Ensure the area to be worked on and the exit points are clear of
obstruction and that safe access and egress is maintained.
7) Check any electrical or hand tools for damage or faults, faulty or
damaged tools must be removed from service immediately.
8) Do not leave tools and equipment unattended at any time.
9) Ensure the work area is left safe at end of each shift and when unattended.

Maintenance/repair work

1) Liaise with other contractors and facilities manager to isolate water supplies.
2) Isolate Hot & cold water pipes where necessary.
3) Drain down the water system where necessary.
4) When chasing out the walls firstly use the cable/pipe finder to locate
any electric cables or pipe work.
5) Mark the wall for the area to be chased out.
6) On plasterboard walls carefully cut out using a knife or saw.
7) On plaster walls chase out using a Kango power chisel or hand bolster.
8) If necessary remove any skirting boards by driving the bolster chisel
behind the board and carefully levering it away from the wall (gloves
should always be worn)
9) If necessary to take up any floorboards these should first be
checked with the cable/pipe finder to ensure the area below the
board is clear.

10) Set the circular saw to 18mm depth and along the length of the board
on both sides through the tennon (on some floors it may be
necessary to reset the saw to a depth of 22mm and take a second
cut
11) Using the bolster chisel lever up the board, remove all nails.
12)When taking up carpet and lifting floorboards attention will be paid to
the trip hazard created, do not leave open floorboards and
upturned carpets any longer than is

necessary, sufficient warning signs must be posted where there is a


risk of other contractors entering the site.
13)Carry out replacement of parts or repairs.
14)Ensure waste pipes and other plastic pipe work are connected correctly.
15)Where plastic pipe is connected with solvents, staff will follow all safe use
instructions.
16) Where solder work has to be carried out, prepare pipe work for solder joints.
17) Obtain the appropriate hot work permit from the facilities manager.
18) Ensure the correct type of fire extinguisher is on hand during hot work.
19) Protect surrounding area with heat shields.
20) Ensure adequate ventilation for solder work.
21)Connect and solder all necessary joints.
22)Check all joints.
23) Liaise with facilities manager to turn water supplies back on.
24)Carry out further checks for water tightness and quality of finish.
25)Chlorinate the system if required and check for successful completion.
26) Request facilities manager to inspect works.
27) Issue certificate of completion and chlorination to facilities manager.
28) Pack tools and equipment and leave area clean and tidy.
29) Maintain fire watch for 2 - 4 hours where hot work has been carried out.
30) Report to site office and sign off permit to work.

Method Statement for Underground Drainage Pipes

Scope of Work:
This method Statement Covers the details of following activities:
• HSE Requirements
• Installation of drainage UPVC pipe, under Ground.
Procedures:
• HSE Requirements
• All personnel working at site shall attend HSE induction I awareness
training programs.
• Nominated supervisor will remain at site during the execution of the work.
• Necessary safety precautions shall be implemented for all activities
associated with electrical materials as per the materials data sheet.
• PPE shall be worn at all times.
• Safety officer will remain present at site and will ensure that the provisions
made in project
• All necessary precautionary I Safety measures such as putting warning
tapes shall be taken

Methodology
Installation of underground drainage pipe
• Provide labor, materials, equipment and services, and perform operations
required for complete installation of the drainage and related work as
indicated on the drawings.
• Pitch horizontal piping not less than 1/8 inch per foot down in direction of
flow
• Trap Fixtures, as indicated on the drawings.
• The changes in direction of piping will be made using long radius fittings.
• The set of floor drains below the normal finished floor will be with a
gradual pitch extending away from the drain
• The pipes and fittings will be kept clean; Plug exposed ends of incomplete
or unconnected work.
• The Cleanouts will be placed at each change of direction.
• The cleanouts on concealed piping shall be extended through and
terminate flush with the finished floor.
• The cleanouts shall be also provided provided at or near the foot of each
vertical soil and waste stack.
• The cleanouts shall be installed such that the cleanout opens in a direction
opposite to the flow of the drainage line or at right angle
• The connections between dissimilar pipes will be made with approved
dielectric adapters
• Clamp floor drains penetrating water proofing membrane to the
membrane.
• Supply clamping collars with drains where flashing is required or
waterproofing membrane is penetrated.
• The pipes and drains penetrating the ground floor watertight will be made
with an approved sealing compound or modular
• The roof drains will be installed as per the size as indicated on the drawings,
including approval features
• The floor drain shall be constructed of heavy duty UPVC, as per approved
drawing and shall conform to the approved specifications

• Each Area drain shall be constructed of concrete and shall conform to the
approved requirements.
• The gully traps shall be of PVC with cleanouts on suction and discharge
sides. Gully traps shall be vented. Gully Trap shall be installed in concrete
pit with fill in heavy duty cast iron cover frame, size of pit to suit gully trap
size, gully trap shall be constructed of reinforced concrete duty cast iron fill
in type cover and frame complete as detailed on drawings.
• Vent Caps shall be PVC with inlet to fit inside the open and of the vent pipe
as per the drawings
• The water tests will be made to every part of each drainage system as per
specifications. The water will be Kept in the system for test for at lat last 15
minutes before inspection starts
• Correct defects detected by any test and retest.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR INSTALLATION OF SPRINKLER & FIRE FIGHTING


SYSTEM PIPEWORK& ACCESSORIES
The purpose of this Method Statement is to define the procedure step by step to
implement the correct practices for Installation of sprinkler & fire fighting pipe
work & accessories through the guidelines contained herein so as to ensure that
the job execution complies with the requirements and serves the intended function
to satisfactory level.
• Portable Hand tools
• Portable Drill machines
• Portable Grinding machine
• Gas Cutting set
• Welding machine
• Pipe grooving machine
• Pipe threading machine

PROCEDURE FOR INSTALLATION OF HORIZONTAL PIPES


• Prior to start of installation all the sprinkler & fire fighting works shall be
painted on ground using approved RED paint.
• The pipe routing and location of supports on the soffit of slab will be
marked as per approved shop drawing.
• Drilling of holes in soffit for pipe hanger supports will be done in
accordance with recommended spacing schedule given below.
• The approved fixing hangers & supports shall be installed in the holes drilled
in the soffit & shall be secured properly.
• The pipe work painted & approved by Consultant will be installed in position
using the fixed hangers & supports.
• Pipe slope shall be properly pitched down while installation of pipe
works to facilitate drainage of the piping system.
• The joining of the piping shall be carried out using approved Victaulic grooved
fittings for pipe sizes of diameter more that 21/2 inches. The pipes below 21/2
inches shall be connected using threaded joints.
• A rigid support shall be provided near the zone control valve of sprinkler
and fire fighting system.
• After completion of installation of main lines of the piping network the
installation of piping branches shall commence.

• The correct size of hole-saw cutter will be used to drill the pipes for fixing of
clamps tees (mechanical tee) as per manufacturer's recommendation.
• Flexible Victaulic couplings will be used for accommodating expansion or
contraction of the pipe work.

INSTALLATION OF RISER PIPES FOR FIREFIGHTING SYSTEM
• On completion of the slab on the highest floor of each zone the shaft shall be
temporarily covered and cleared for installation for the floors below. Thereby
avoiding debris, waste materials, tools etc. ,from falling into the shaft or on the
workmen.
• Subsequently the shafts shall be inspected for completeness and measurements
will be taken for supports.
• The pipe sizes shall be identified based on the approved shop drawings and shifted
to the respective floors.
• The installation of the riser pipes will start with the marking & fixing of pipe
supports. One support for riser pipes shall be provided at each floor.
• Additional anchoring support & flexible couplings shall be provided in all risers at
suitable locations to accommodate expansion I contraction requirements as per
approved shop drawings.
• At least two supports shall be provided for all the riser pipes in every floor (i.e. one
support at every two meters)
• Upon securing the supports one length of pipe shall be lowered into the shaft using
suitable rope & shall be installed in position. The subsequent lengths of piping will
be installed in the same manner, one length at a time.
• The same procedure shall be followed for all the riser shafts in all the other zones.
• Temporary caps will be provided to all open ends of the piping upon completion of
the works or until commencement of further works.
• Class E 3505 sleeves shall be provided in all pipe penetration through slabs &
walls.
• The gap between the pipe & the sleeve shall be sealed using approved sealant.
• Air vents & drain points shall be provided in the pipe work in locations as shown in
approved shop drawings at high & low points respectively.

INSTALLATION OF VALVES & ACCESSORIES


• The installation of valves, sprinklers & the accessories for fire fighting system shall
be installed in accordance with the approved shop drawings & manufacturer's
recommendation & unions shall be provided for valves smaller than 2%".
• Valves of sizes more than 2 1/2 inches shall be provided with flanges to facilitate
dismantling for maintenance.
• The location of sprinklers on the false ceiling shall be as per the approved reflected
ceiling plan.
• All valves shall be properly identified using valve tags as per specification.
• A test & drain valve shall be installed in the Zone control valve station in each floor.

PRESSURE TESTING OF INSTALLED PIPING
• When the installation of a system or part of it has been completed, the pipe work
will be visually inspected and hydraulic pressure testing will be arranged.
• Pipes may be tested as a whole or in sections to facilitate the progress of work.
The pipes shall be flushed after successful completion of pressure test & will be left
dry with the open ends closed.
• Visual inspection will be done to ensure that the installation procedures have been
followed and pipes & fittings are adequately supported in the prescribed manner.
• Hydraulic Pressure testing will be carried out at 12 Bar for 8 hours to ensure that
there is no leakage of any kind in the installed pipe-work.
• All open ends of the pipe work will be temporarily closed with air venting facility and
water will be filled in the pipe-work.
• While filling of water in the pipe-work, it shall be ensured that entire air has been
vented off and water has reached all the parts of the pipe-work under testing.
• The pressure shall be maintained in the system or in the portion under test for 2
Hours.
• While the system is under pressure, a careful inspection shall be made on the
pipes & joints to ensure that there is no leakage of any kind.
• If any leakage is observed in the pipe joints the same shall be rectified by redoing
the joints or by replacing the subject fitting. The entire pipe work shall be retested
to the same criteria.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR INSTALLATION OF FIRE HOSE CABINETS. HOSE


RACK. HOSE REEL & EXTINGUISHERS
Following tools shall be required for the installation of hose reel cabinets/racks
and extinguishers.
• Portable Hand tools
• Portable Drill machines
• Portable Grinding machine
• Gas Cutting set
• Welding machine
• Pipe grooving machine
• Pipe threading machine

HANDLING & STORAGE OF MATERIALS


• On receipt of Fire Hose Cabinets, Hose Racks, Hose Reels & Extinguishers at site
necessary precautions shall be taken for unloading, shifting and storage, as follows:-
• The Fire Hose Cabinets, Hose Racks, Reels & Extinguishers shall be carefully off-
loaded by deploying necessary I adequate manpower in such a way that no damage
is caused.
• The Fire Hose Cabinets, Hose Racks, Reels & Extinguishers shall be inspected,
handled & stored properly upon receipt at site.
• All materials shall be stored in a place free of water, dust & adequately covered to
avoid any kind of damages.
• The Materials shall be transported to work place using adequate manpower.
• While unloading, shifting and storage, it shall be ensured that there are no transit
damages.
• Any discrepancies, damage etc., found will be notified and reported to QA/QC
engineer & Engineer in charge - Plumbing for further action.
• Materials found not suitable for site use will be removed from site immediately &
replaced by appropriate material_
INSTALLATION PROCEDURES FOR HOSE REEL CABINETS
• Prior to start of installation it shall be ensured that the shop drawings including
coordination drawings of the respective area are approved. The locations of the fire
cabinets shall also be shown on the Architectural drawings.
• It shall be ensured that the area is released to proceed with MEP installations.
• It shall be ensured that the Fire Hose Cabinets, Hose Reels & extinguishers are as
per the approved material submittal & have been inspected & approved.

• INSTALLATION OF SURFACE MOUNTED FIRE HOSE CABINETS
• Prior to start of installation it shall be ensured that the wall has been painted &
released to proceed with the installation.
• The location of the fire hose cabinet shall be marked as per the approved shop
drawings.
• The height of installation of the cabinets shall be in line with the civil defense
approved drawing.
• The Fire hose cabinets shall be installed in place using four 1Omm approved
anchors
• & bolts, ensuring the door will open 180 deg without blocking any valves.

INSTALLATION OF HOSE RACK FOR SURFACE MOUNTED CABINETS


• The Fire Hose rack shall be fixed inside the cabinet through a landing valve supplied
with the hose rack.
• The piping connection to the hose rack landing valve shall be as per civil defense
approved approved shop drawings, pipe penetrations to be properly sealed.
• Labeling & identification shall be provided to the equipment in English & Arabic.
INSTALLATION OF HOSE REEL FOR SURFACE MOUNTED CABINETS
• The Hose reel shall be installed inside the fire cabinet utilizing the existing brackets
in the cabinet. Hose reel shall open fully & easily in all directions by just pulling the
hose nozzle without even touching the reel.
• The piping c,onnection to the hose reel shall be as per civil defense approved
shop drawings.

INSTALLATION OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS FOR SURFACE MOUNTED


CABINETS
• Two approved fire extinguishers shall be placed inside the fire hose cabinets
as per approved shop drawings & material submittal.

INSTALLATION OF RECESSED FIRE HOSE CABINETS


• Prior to start of installation it shall be ensured that the wall around the fire cabinet
has been painted & released to proceed with the installation.
• Ensure that the block work opening for the fire hose cabinet is as per the approved
shop drawings prior to start of installation.
• The height & location of installation of the cabinets shall be in line with the civil
defense approved drawings.
• The fire cabinet shall be then placed in the opening with the outer flange flush with
the wall and shall be fitted to the block wall using 1Omm approved fasteners (8-
10nos as per the size of the cabinet). The door of the cabinet shall open 180
degrees to civil defense approval.
• Labeling & identification shall be provided to the equipment in English.

Method Statement For Installation OfFirefi&hting Pump Set


Material Handling &
Storage:
On receipt of Fire Hose Cabinets, Hose Racks, Hose Reels & Extinguishers at
site necessary precautions shall be taken for unloading, shifting and storage, as
follows:-
• Upon arrival at site, the Fire Fighting pumps shall be off-loaded carefully at site
using necessary manpower and required equipment to ensure that no damage is
caused.
• Advertisement
• The Fire Fighting pumps shall be preferably shifted directly to the pump room
immediately upon arrival at site.
• On the floor, Fire Fighting pumps will be stored in a clean, dry place & adequate
covering by tarpaulin sheets will be done to protect the equipment from deposition of
construction dust till it is finally shifted to its foundation.
• All the received Fire Fighting pumps will be checked to ensure that the pumps
comply with the approved material submittals in terms of their make, model, type,
capacity, etc.,
• Any discrepancy or damages etc., will be notified and reported for further action.
Material found not suitable for site use will be removed immediately from site & the
• same will be replaced by correct item.

Installation Offirefiptiqg Pumps Procedure
Prior to start of installation it shall be ensured that the shop drawings including
coordination drawings of the respective area are approved.
• It shall be ensured that the area is released by HEE to proceed with MEP
installations.
• It shall be ensured that the Fire Fighting Pumps are as per the approved material
submittal and have been inspected & approved.
• Ensure that the pump foundation is according to manufacturer's
recommendations and NFPA standards.
• After inspecting the work area I foundation and ensuring that it is totally ready for
installation, the required pumps shall be moved to the place of installation.
• Proper marking shall be done on the foundation for drilling & fixing the required
fasteners to fix the pumps in position.
• The pumps shall then be placed on the foundation & shall be fitted in position
directly on the foundation.
• It shall be ensured that the fastners are tight enough to hold the pump in position
during operation.
• After installation and approval of the pumps the Fire Fighting piping system
shall be connected to the inlet & outlet of the pumps.
• It shall be ensured that the piping is properly supported using hanger supports.
Flexible connectors shall be installed at pump inlet & outlet to permit movement due
to vibrations, expansion & contraction.
• The pump set shall be mounted on a common base plate of steel and directly
connected to motor through a flexible coupling. The base shall conform to NFPA
standards.
• It shall be ensured that the pumps & motors are properly installed with flexible
connectors without pipe strain transmitted to the pump casing.
• A flow meter shall be installed to measure and indicate flow through the piping
system. The meter shall be UL listed I FM approved & the location shall be shown
on the shop drawings.
• The pump control panel shall be installed as per approved shop drawings &
manufacturer's recommendations.
• The required power & control wiring shall be carried out as per specification &
manufacturer's recommendations.
• While installation of cable trays & trunking it shall be ensured that the routing does
not hinder the access to various parts of the pump.
• Valve tags and sign identifications shall be provided as per requirements.
• The alarm control valve drain for the sprinkler system shall be connected to the
sump piUsewage, pit further the wet riser drain shall also be connected to the sump
piUswage pit

6- Handling & Storage:

On receipt of Domestic water Pipes & Fittings, the materials shall be handled &
stored in line with the following procedure:

6-1 - pipes will be stacked on a flat surface free from sharp projections, stones or
other object likely to caused point loading or pipe deformation

6-2- The storage area shall be kept in proper level, so that the stacked pipes may
be uniformly supported throughout their length,

6-3- Pipes wi ll not be dropped on hard surface and will not be dragged along the
ground, Wherever possible the loading and unloading of pipes will be carried out
manually by hand.

6-4- If mechanical lifting equipment is used, ensure no metallic slings, hooks or


chains will be used in direct contact with the pipe. Rope or nylon belt sling will be
preferred which will not damage or cut the pipe surface.

6-5- Pipe of different sizes or wall thickness will be stored separately this is not
possible, those with larger diameters and I or thicker walls wi ll be placed at the
bottom of the stack.

6-6- The stacks will be protected from direct sunlight by covering with tarpaulin
sheets.

6-7- All the pipe fittings will stored in the boxes as supplied by fitting
manufacturer.

7- Installation Procedures
7-1- Hot Water Supply Pipes (PPR)
Area of installation : All piping up to 4 inches.
7-1-1- All Installation shall be made as per approved shopdrawing.
7-1-2- Approved polypropylene pipes, fittings and valves shall be used for
installation.
7-1-3- Prior to installation the pipes and f ittings shall be cleaned properly.
7-1-4 all supports shall be installed ensuring correct alignment of pipes and
location as per manufacturer.
7-1-5- UPVC (Class - E to BS 3505). Sleeve shall provided wherever water pipes
pass through walls, slabs, etc_ Annular space between pipe and sleeve shall be
filled with rock wool and both end shall be sealed with waterproof or fire proof
sealant as specified.

7-1-6- In order to make proper thermo fusion joint by using thermo fusion
machine, the pipe shall be cut perpendicu lar to the axis and the cut edge shall be
smoothed off from any sharp edges.
7-1-7-The depth of the socket shall be marked on the pipe as manufacturers
recommendation. This mark shall be used as a reference to indicate how deeply
the part of the pipe penetrate into the fitting.
7-1-8- Once the pipe and the fitting/ piece are ready and the heating reaches the
set temperature, the fitting process shall be started.
7-1-9- The pipe should be quickly & firmly Pushed into the bush up to the mark,
while the fitting is slipped over the spindle.
7-1-10- During this operation the pipe and the fitting must be held firmly without
any turning movement.
7-1-11- The surface of the pieces to be joined should be heated as per the
recommendation of supplier & manufacturer's thermo fusion welding
parameters for polypropylene pipes.
7-1-12 After the specified time the pieces as withdrawn from the heating
element & immediately joined without any turn ing movement.
7-1-13- The Pipe shall be inserted up to the mark i.e. right up to the bottom of
the socket & the tow pieces must be held together for the heating time given
above.
7-1-14- The welded joint should not be stressed until the cooling time has
elapsed.
7-1-15- After each welding operation, the spindle and bushing of the heating
element shall be thorough ly cleaned.
7-1-16- Provision for expansion & contraction such as expansion bellows, loops
w ill be provided as required .
7-1-17- Necessary anchor I sliding supports shall be provided as required at site
to accommodate the expansion I contraction of the system.
7-1-18- Drain valves shall be installed in the lowest point & air vents shall be
installed in the highest point as per requ irement as site during installation.
7-1-19- Water Hammer Arresters shall be installed as per approved shop
drawings. ( Stress analysis on water supply system and to consider all necessary
measures to ensure that the system is water hammer free).

7-1-20- After Getting approval for installation of pipe works, the system will be
tested@ 8 Bar for 6 hours. In case any leak or drop in test pressure, the
respected pipe work shall be rectified and retested.

7-2- Hot water supply Pipes (PEX)

Area of installation: all concealed piping.

7-2-1-All installation shall be made as per approved shop drawing I specification.

7-2-2-Approved cross linked Poly Ethylene pipes, Fittings and valves shall be used for
concealed installation.

7-2-3- Prior to installation the pipes and fittings shall be cleaned properly.

7-2-4- The routing o the pipes shall be marked on the wall/ slab & the necessary
chasing shall be done by the main contractor.

7-2-5- the pipes shall be installed in these grooves in the wall /slab using supports.

7-2-6- Upon Installation of the piping, the same shall be pressure tested @ 8 Bar for
6 hours.

7-2-7- Upon successful completion of pressure test, the pipes shall be concealed by
main contractor.

7-3- Cold Water Supply Pipes UPVC (Class E 3505)

Area of Installation: All piping.

7-3-1- All installation will be made as per approved drawing I specifications.

7-3-2- Approved UPVC pipes Class E- 3505, Fittings and valves shall be used for
Installation o could water supply

7-3-3- All UPVC Class E - 3505, pipes shall be connected using solvent cement joints.

7-3-4- Prior to installation the pipes and fittings shall be cleaned properly using the
cleaner recommended by the manufacturer

7-3-5- The mating surfaces shall be cleaned again using the cleaning agent.

7-3-6- After The mating surfaces are Thoroughly clean & dry. The bonding solvent
cement shall be applied on both the mating surfaces.

7-3-7-the joint shall be left undisturbed for 5 minutes prior to proceeding with further
works on the piping.

7-3-8- All supports shall be installed ensuring correct alignment of pipes and location as
per manufacturer recommendation.

7-3-9- UPVC (Class-E to BS 3505) sleeve shall be provided wherever water supply pipes
pass through walls, slabs, etc. Annular space Between pipe and sleeve shall be filled with
rock wool and both end shall be sealed with water proof or fire proof sealant as
specified.

7-3-10- After getting approval for installation of pipe works, the system will be hydro
tested. Hydro tested @ 8 Bar for 6 hours. In case any leake or drop in test pressure has
been revealed, the respective pipe work shall be rectified and retested.

7-4-Cold water supply Pipes (PEX)

Area of installation: All Concealed piping.

7-4-1- same procedure as points 7-3-1 to 7-3-7

8- Inspection & testing:

Inspection I: Installation of Hot water Pipe Works

Inspection II: Pressure testing of hot water pipes work

Inspection 111: Installation Of cold water pipes work

Inspection IV: pressures testing of cold water pipes work.
