In chapter 6, the pigs started to take their meals in the kitchen and sleep in the beds in the farmhouse.

These
actions were obviously against the Seven Commandments. But the animals were reassured just by Squealer’s
speech. Also, in chapter 9, when Boxer was taken away to horse slaughterer, the animals couldn’t read what was
written on the side of the van. And in chapter 8, Benjamin acted in indifferent attitude. When Frederick and the
men attacked animal farm, he was just watching that with saying “I thought so.” Also, when Squealer stunned,
only Benjamin was able to know what that meant. But he did nothing.

At first, all the animals, including the pigs, wanted to make an ideal society that every animal are equal.
However, as the time passed, some animals became more equal than others. I think that the ignorance and
indifference of the animals were the main reason of that situation. If they had realized the corruption of pigs and
claimed their rights, they would have succeeded in creating an ideal society that they wanted. From these, my
topic is that ignorance and indifference are barriers to creating an ideal society.

In my life, I have had experience with this topic. When I was in elementary school, there was a classmate who
was bullied by friends. One day, I saw some friends hiding his textbooks. However, I pretended not to see it with
indifferent attitude because I was reluctant to get involved with it. I think that If I had told my teacher about it or
stopped my friends, then all the classmates would have been happier.

There is an example of this topic also in our society. The former president of Korea, Park Chung-hee had been a
dictator for 18 years. He amended the constitution with an aim of long-term seizure of power. Also, he forced to
dissolve the National Assembly and suspended the activities of all politicians. However, many ignorant people
at that time accepted his dictatorship positively under the pretext of economic development. I think that if more
people had realized and resisted the problems of dictatorship, they could have created a democratic society
faster.

Sapiens, written by Yuval Harari, is a book with the story about cognitive revolution. It says that the
development of thinking and communication has created the boundary between human beings and animals. That
is, human beings have made many advances through thinking and communication. Therefore, ignorance and
indifference of human beings mean that there are no more ideal social advances.

In conclusion, ignorance and indifference in our lives and our society, as well as animal farm, is a big problem.
It may lead the certain people’s spirit of privilege and political unrest. Also, there is a saying that ‘anything is
better than indifference.’ If we want to create an ideal society, the need for education is obvious and it is time for
everyone to be interested and participate in society.
