NUMERIC , DAYS AND DATE

A. CARDINAL NUMBER (Bilangan Pokok)


Hundreds
Use 100 always with 'a' or 'one'.

100 - a hundred / one hundred

'a' can only stand at the beginning of a number.

100 - a hundred / one hundred


2,100 - two thousand, one hundred

Ordinal Number (Bilangan bertingkat)

Separation between hundreds and tens


Hundreds and tens are usually separated by 'and' (in American English 'and' is not
necessary).
110 - one hundred and ten
715 – seven hudred and fifteen
1,250 - one thousand two hundred and fifty
2,001 - two thousand and one
1985 – one thousand nine hundred and eighty
Thousands and Millions
Use 1,000 and 1,000,000 always with 'a' or 'one'.
1,000 - a thousand / one thousand
201,000 - two hundred and one thousand

Use commas as a separator.

Singular (tunggal) or Plural (jamak)?


Numbers are usually written in singular (tunggal)

not modified by another number or expression (e.g. a few / several).

Capital Letters
Remember, in English that the first letter of the day or month is always in capital
letters.
 January correct - january incorrect
 Thursday correct - thursday incorrect
Though the first letter of the seasons does not begin with a capital letters.
 Spring incorrect - spring correct

You normally split up the year in tens.

1985 is split up in 19 and 85. (You say: nineteen eighty-five).

From 2000 until 2009 the year is normally not split up.

2000 = two thousand

2001 = two thousand (and) one

The word and is often left out. From 2010 on the year is split up again.

2010 is split up in 20 and 10. (You say: twenty ten).

Note: The two letters at the end of the number and the comma are often left out.

You say: January (the)* first twenty ten

* The definite article ›the‹ can be left out.

Sample sentences and the correct prepositions:

 I was born in 1999. (Use in with the year.)

 I was born in August. (Use in with the month.)

 I was born on 12th May, 2000. (Use on in the complete date.)
