Material Identification
on Components of Motor Vehicles

Foreword
According to VDA 260, the identification of the materials on components of motor vehicles serves
exclusively for recycling of material that is ideally segregated by type. Identification is mandatory for plastic
components made of polymeric materials according to Article 8 of Directive 2000/53/EC of the European
Parliament and of the Council of 18 September 2000 on end-of-life vehicles.

This edition supersedes the previous edition 2011-07 of this Standard.

Changes
In comparison with edition 2011-07, the following changes have been made:

Foreword Completely revised; text taken over from Section 1, "Scope".

Section “Abbreviated material Section without content deleted
designation for documentation”
Section "Determination Section deleted; requirements and specifications for VDA 260 moved
of the marking" to the section "Indications on drawings" and revised.
Section 1 Text revised and partly moved to the Foreword. Requirements moved
to Section 5.
Section 5 Specifications for the material identification on a component
summarized in one section. Identification requirements revised.
Section 6 Section edited and identification requirements revised.

NOTE: This translation is for information purposes only.

The German version shall prevail above all others.

1 Scope
This Standard shall be applied when the material identification is required on a motor vehicle component.
The structure of the material identification is governed by VDA 260. The present Standard governs
the drawing implementation. It does not apply to packaging.

2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated
references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced
document (including any changes) applies.

4 General requirements
For safety requirements, homologation (in particular, exhaust emissions) and quality, the existing statutory
requirements and laws shall be complied with. In addition, the relevant requirements of the Daimler Group
apply.

All materials, procedures, processes, components, and systems shall conform to the current statutory
requirements regarding regulated substances and recyclability.

5 Specifications for material identification on components

5.1 General
For components made of synthetic polymeric materials (plastics and elastomers) with a component mass
of > 100 g, the material shall be indicated on the component (see Directive 2000/53/EC of the European
Parliament). Identification of other materials is not mandatory but is recommended (especially
for castings). The material code, which indicates the material on the component, shall be defined
according to the rules of VDA 260.
For internal drawings, it shall be ensured that there are no redundant material specifications. For this
reason, the material code shall not be entered in the material identification placeholder.

5.2 Position and ranking order of the identification

The rules of VDA 260 shall apply. When determining the position of the material identification, it should
be close to other markings. Legally required markings shall have priority in cases where space is limited.

5.3 Legibility
The marking shall be permanent. It shall be positioned such that it is not destroyed when the part
is removed or installed, and can be easily read on the removed part. The marking shall not become
illegible if the component is used as intended.

5.4 Material identification placeholder

The position and form of the material identification is indicated on the component drawing using the
material identification placeholder. The representation according to Figure 1 shall preferably be used
as a placeholder for internal drawings. Unlike for supplier drawings, the material code according
to VDA 260 shall not be documented in the material identification placeholder for the component
on the drawing. On supplier drawings, the material code shall be placed between the symbols > and <;
see Figure 2.

The symbols > and < are part of the material identification and shall be visible on the component.

5.5 Composite parts

Composite parts shall be marked according to VDA 260. The marking text (see Section 5.6)
shall be created according to the specifications of MBN 33035.

5.6 Indication of the material identification placeholder

The placeholder may be indicated on the drawing using a reference text and arrow (see Figure 3).
Alternatively, a text field for the reference text may be positioned near the standard title block (see Figure
4). An additional reference to VDA 260 is permitted.

5.7 Lettering
Lettering from DIN 1451-4 or DIN EN ISO 3098-1 shall preferably be used for the material identification
on the component. If DIN 1451-4 is used, the typeface H (medium) is preferred. In the case of
DIN EN ISO 3098-1, the typeface (B), inclination (V), and Latin alphabet (L) are preferred (ISO 3098-BVL).
The lettering height shall be at least 3 mm. If there is enough space, the lettering height of 5 mm
is recommended. The lettering (size and form) may be adapted to another marking that is already
on the component (such as a product mark according to MBN 10435).

6 Recycling symbol
Relevant regulations may require that specific, usually packaging-like components be marked with
the international three-arrow recycling symbol (symbol no. 1135 from ISO 7000 / see Figure 5).
If the recycling symbol is required, it shall be positioned above the material identification according
to VDA 260. Observe the specifications of DIN 6120-2 when creating the identification.

and recycling symbol no. 1135 according to ISO 7000
The recycling symbol no.1135 shall not be drawn or dimensioned. It shall have a height approximately
3 times that of the lettering and shall be placed centrally at a distance h above the material identification.

For presentation on the drawing, see Figure 6 (a placeholder for the recycling symbol is optional):
