Abstract

This study entitled, “Level of English Reading Proficiency”, was

conducted at Maria Aurora National High School. Generally, this study aimed to

analyzed the level of proficiency and deficiency of grade 7 in English reading and

to determine the recommended reading intervention of grade 7 teachers for the

learners. By the used of total enumeration using descriptive type of research, the

total of 229 grade 7 teachers and learners were selected.

Findings revealed that majority of grade 7 were within 12 years old and

mostly were females with High school graduate parents, and majority of them

were proficient readers. Thus, from the results of the distributed questionnaire to

the teachers, the recommended reading intervention was scaffolding wherein

learners will be given support and proving assistance in improving the learners

reading skills. Similarly, oral reading program for learners was also

recommended. However, giving different choices of preferred reading for learners

is of least priority.

Therefore, to further enhance the reading skills of the learners, this study

recommended to conduct of parent’s action cell (PLAC) to intensify reading

intervention for grade 7 learners to convert reading deficiency into reading

proficiency level. Grade 7 learners should attend strategic adolescent reading

intervention (STARI), program designed to move students to the higher level of

proficiency. To equip the grade 7 learners with strategic reading skills the every

child a reader program was recommended to the utilize to make the learners an

independent young readers.
