Detailed description of English Department

-
English Language

A degree in English helps students learn and apply the language proficiently in a variety of career and daily life settings. Knowing English

methodically is a big benefit in the present trend of "multinationalization." In developed nations, learners will have more options and will

have an easier time succeeding in their careers. In order to compete in the job market of today, students who study English have the chance

to approach and study the theory of language, history, and culture of two typical native countries, England and America. They are also

equipped with complementary knowledge in economics, finance, tourism, events, teaching, and other fields. The value of an English

3
language major degree remains constant over time, and English language learners will always have a "martial advantage" in the global

labor market.

-
Goals for Training

An English-language training bachelor's degree holder possesses the necessary political attributes, morals, information, expertise,

professional demeanor, and strong integration capacity to function well in domains of business where English is used. UK, satisfying the

demands of the labor market and the requirements of the nation's international integration. According to the 6-level Foreign Language

Competency Framework for Vietnam, graduates have solid English knowledge and can speak and write it fluently at level 5. (equivalent to

level C1 according to the Reference Framework for Foreign Language Competency). Common European Language (CEFR) or at least 6.5

on all four language proficiency tests (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) given internationally.

-
Future career

Graduates of universities who majored in English can find employment in organizations, businesses, and agencies that use English, such as

translators and interpreters, teachers, secretaries, international relations staff, international cooperation economists, business, office

workers, media, coordinators, or startups, building and owning a business.

II.
Description of my Job Role

In the first semester as a Senior student at Thang Long University, I studied Educational Psychology, Oral Translate, and an important

credit – Graduate Internship. My practice was aided by Ms. Kim Phuong, who was highly committed to coaching and providing feedback.

She gave me a class STC3 on Wednesday, period 1-2 and I teached them in 4 lessons, including Listening and Reading, a lesson Revision

and Case study, and writing a formal email. In this period, my mission was to learn about psychology in education and how to apply

whatever I have learnt to teach. As an internship teacher, I applied the PPP method and let students elicit their lessons because students are

the center, not teacher-centered.

III.
Self-reflection on your internship in relation to academic knowledge acquired at the university

1. Objectives of the internship

The objective of the internship is to help students apply the knowledge they have learned in teaching, and learn how to become an active

and energetic English teacher. This short internship helped students learn how to face problems in the classroom and how to solve it. In

order for the classroom to be student-centered, teachers need to know how to elicit and make students interact more, making the lesson

practical, students concentrate and interested in the lesson.

2. Areas of professional development experiences during the internship

I have accumulated plenty of professional development experience. The first is how can I apply my knowledge and abilities. Thanks to my

internship, my understanding of teaching theories was translated into a variety of useful approaches and abilities that I can now apply in

real-life situations, from completing extensive competition analysis study to building a lesson and teaching plan.

4
The second is precious enthusiasm. As an intern, I learned how important it is to be excited about learning new things, open to asking for

additional work, and interested to learn and ask questions. This approach will demonstrate your enthusiasm for helping and enjoyment of

teamwork. Curious and enthusiastic individuals also get more out of their work as interns, which leads to numerous chances.

The third area, journaling, is an excellent way to advance personally. I kept notes during my internship and provided feedback each day on

new things I learned, my teacher's comments, my strengths and shortcomings, and topics I wanted to explore and learn more about. This

played a key role immensely. This improved my self-awareness and allowed me to discover my areas for growth.

Moreover, success in the workplace depends on effective communication. I discovered that it's crucial to speak with my pupils in order to

facilitate their interactions, as well as with my teacher if I have any questions or unsure of how to complete a task. Better than pretending

you understand what has to be done is asking for assistance and explanation. Effective communication is essential for an intern's growth,

productivity, efficiency, and engagement.

Last but not least, I understood the advantages of accepting criticism. It's crucial to get and accept professional criticism. In order to

advance and succeed in your work, it is crucial to make note of both the good and bad things. I discovered that getting or giving feedback

might be challenging, doing so will have a big influence on your life and career moving forward.

3. Your evaluation on what you performed

During this internship, I encountered many difficulties because this was the first time in class, for the first-time teaching students the same

age as me. I have to cope with factors like age, conduct, and social relationships that teachers cannot control when educating pupils. The

pupils already have a strong foundation and a high level of self-discipline, so teachers do not need to shout at them but that also creates

conditions for me that I find very challenging. Another challenge is too much tasks need to do but have lack of times. I have to balance

between majoring, lesson planning, classroom teaching, and other household chores, then timing for teaching practice is limited. Even

though I do not practice more but still try my best and change the way of teaching gradually thanks to my instructor's feedback, guidance

and support.

The gaps between the “bookish knowledge” and “real world” is honestly opposed. “You can forget 80% of what you’ve been taught in the

classroom because we are going to show you the real world and how to apply some of what you’ve been taught and which you need to

forget completely.” The "best" educational resource is a book! It's not the only aspect of life where you spend time learning and

comprehending, and you might not get along with everyone, but that's not what matters. Even though knowledges from books are

unexpected but books do not teach me how to deal with problems, how to teach, how to facilitate students ... in reality, so lack

of soft skills forced me to learn a lot from my colleagues.

Foreign language teaching methods, educational psychology, lesson plan design, language and assessment are academic courses at

university that are the most useful for my job. I learnt plenty of knowledge: how to make lesson plans and teach professionally when

5
learning design lesson plans and foreign language teaching methods; the ways of students thinking and how to treat them well in learning

educational psychology; how to test students.

My strong and weak points were unveiled markedly. About strong points, my instructor told me that I am really suitable for being a

teacher; I applied smooth methods on controlling because I have experience in tutoring for quite a long time; and I learnt thousands from

feedback and turned that into strength for the next lesson. However, weaknesses always come as well as strengths. Because I had been

tutored for a long time, I forgot the energy that I used to have. The requirement of teaching is too many tasks and I can not force them

easily. To become a professional teacher, I have to get rid of the childish or informal styles and put on more mature clothes instead.

Moreover, the perspective of speech and manners are also quite crucial. Without being serious, calm, and patient, teachers cannot manage a

classroom. I do not have enough patience and can not focus on doing something for too long, hence controlling a big class with students my

age was entirely tough for me. Difficult in making a perfect lesson plan without asking for help, exhausted from making an active class,... I

think teaching is incredibly difficult and exhausting, thus I would enjoy working in real estate, business, flight attendant or any other field

that I want to try and love it more than teaching, even though, deep down, I still want to work with students and colleagues.

No matter how disappointed I used to be, I am really appreciative that I got the chance to do an internship and that the lessons I acquired

were so valuable.
