Perspectives of LGBTQ+ on Same Sex Marriage in

San Joaquin, Maria Aurora, Aurora

Growing up is the beginning process of discovering ourselves and

realizing our full potential, so that we can recognize our uniqueness among

others, especially when it comes to questioning our gender identity. Lesbian,

Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and “plus” which represents other

sexual identities including pansexual, asexual and omnisexual or (LGBTQ+) is

the one who feels like they are unique and different from other people around

them. They are facing difficulties in their houses, experience criticism in every

aspect of their lives in their communities, schools, and even at their working

environment, and most of the times, in terms of relationship in their same-sex

or in gender, Kendra Cherry (2022).

Same-sex marriage is a practice of marriage between two men and

two women, which is controversial by the country and other religions. A lot of

people were disagree about same sex marriage because it is against the law

of God, and it is considered as a sin according to the Bible, despite

everything, there are many people who accept and support this practice, and

for them, it symbolizes the equality of gender.

As of 2022, marriage between same-sex couples are legally

performed and recognized in 32 countries (nationwide or in some

jurisdictions), with the most recent were in Chile on March 10, Switzerland on

July 1, and Slovenia on July 8. In Andorra, the law allowing same sex

marriage will come into force on February 17, 2023, after being promulgated

by Emmanuel Macron on August 17, 2022. Adoption rights are not necessarily
2

covered, although most states with same-sex marriage allow those couples to

exercise this right. Adoptions in 34 countries (as of 2021) have definitions of

marriage in their constitutions which prevents marriage between couples with

the same sex, and most enacted in recent decades as a preventive measure.

Some other countries have constitutionally mandated Islamic law,

which is generally interpreted as prohibiting marriage between same-sex

couples. Homosexuality itself is criminalized.

According to Andreo Calonzo (August 12, 2022) there is a bill seeking

to allow same-sex couples to enter into civil unions has been filed at the

Philippine Senate, the first step forward legislating a proposal that had faced

opposition in the predominantly Roman Catholic nations.

The measure proposes to give same-sex couples the right to obtain a

valid license for a civil union to be afforded inheritance and adoption rights.

The bill was put forward by a neophyte Senator Robin Padilla in filing Senate

Bill 449, said this is in line with Sec.1, Art. III of the 1987 Constitution that

guarantees equal protection of the laws for all. He is an actor who got high

votes in the recent senatorial race.

According to the Philippine Journal of Psychology, same-sex marriage

in the Philippines remains a highly contentious issue due to the influence of

religion in this predominantly Catholic country, where it is often framed as an

issue of morality. However, the psychological underpinnings of this religious

influence still merits further exploration. Furthermore, they examined the role

of religious behaviors and moral foundations in predicting attitudes toward

same-sex marriage among Filipinos. The data of 385 participants revealed

3

that the particular behavior of reading the main sacred text of one’s religion,

rather than the often used predictor of religious attendance predicts negative

attitudes.

Marryl Louise C. Santos stated that “the issue of gay rights has been

subjected to a number of heated debates”. That this issue go beyond social,

religious, and cultural aspects, that is also crossed the boundaries of politics.

She also mentioned regarding the gender equality, their right to marriage .

In May 2017, Taiwan’s Constitutional Court reached a landmark decisions

that marriage should be opened same-sex couples within two years (2),

Making Taiwan potentially the first country in Asia to realize marriage equality.

Ming-sho Ho (2019).

Same-sex marriage in the United States tells the story of the legal and

cultural shift, the backlash over the past 15 years. They updated through

2013, this edition details the watershed in rulings in favor of same-sex

marriage; the Supreme Court’s on June 26th repeal of DOMA, and of

Proposition 8 in California, as well as the many states like New Jersey, Illinois,

New Mexico, Hawaii and Nevada where activists and public leaders have

made recent strides to ensure that gay couples have an equal right to marry.
