INTRODUCTION

CORN

corn, (Zea Mays), also called Indian corn or maize, cereal plant of the grass family

(Poaceae) and its edible grain. The domesticated crop originated in the Americas and is one
of the most widely distributed of the world’s food crops. Corn is used as livestock feed, as
human food, as biofuel, and as raw material in industry.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
The corn plant is a tall annual grass with a stout, erect, solid stem. The large
narrow leaves have wavy margins and are spaced alternately on opposite sides of the stem.
Staminate (male) flowers are borne on the tassel terminating the main axis of the stem.
HISTORY

Corn was first domesticated by native peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years

ago. Modern corn is believed to have been derived from the Balsas teosinte (Zea mays
parviglumis), a wild grass. Its culture had spread as far north as southern Maine by the time
of European settlement of North America, and Native Americans taught European colonists
to grow the indigenous grains. Since its introduction into Europe by Christopher
Columbus and other explorers and colonizers, corn has spread to all areas of the world
suitable to its cultivation.

BENEFITS

GLOBAL MARKET AND DEMAND

The major corn producing countries include the United States, China, and Brazil, with the
United States accounting for nearly 36% of the total global output. The United States is also
responsible for over 36% of the global exports, followed by Brazil, Argentina, Ukraine, and
Russia, as the other major exporters of the crop.
The significant consuming markets for corn include the United States, China, the
European Union, Mexico, and Brazil.
This growing demand in these regions is supported by the end-use sectors like the
animal feed and corn starch markets. The United States and China are among the largest
consumers owing to the rapidly growing end-use sectors of corn in these regions .

Talking about India, the production rate shooted to about 26 million tons,
contributing around 2% of total maize production worldwide. Despite being the
third most important cereal crop in India behind rice and , maize is one of the
world's most valuable cereal crops in terms of overall worth.
The market is bifurcated on the basis of source into:

 Organic

 Conventional

Corn finds its applications in the following segments:

 Food and Beverages

 Animal Feed

 Ethanol Production

 Others

CORN SILK
The long shiny fibers at the top of an ear of corn are called corn silk. Corn silk is used as a
medicine.

Corn silk is used for chest pain (angina), high blood pressure, preventing a group
of eye disorders that can lead to vision loss (glaucoma), and many other conditions, but there
is no good scientific evidence to support any uses.

How does it work ?

Corn silk contains proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. It also contains
chemicals which might work like water pills (diuretics), and it might alter blood sugar levels,
and help reduce inflammation.
