Review of Literature:

The Delhi Metropolitan Area (DMA) has experienced significant urban sprawl over the past
few decades, leading to the loss of agricultural and forest land and the destruction of
natural habitats. The following literature review provides an overview of the research
conducted on urban sprawl in the DMA and the measures proposed to address this issue.

According to a research done by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the DMA has
undergone extensive urban expansion, which has resulted in the loss of agricultural and
forest area as well as the degradation of natural ecosystems. Inadequate public transit and
a lack of planning were identified as the primary drivers of urban sprawl in the DMA by the
research. To decrease urban sprawl in the DMA, the report advocated the creation of a
comprehensive public transit infrastructure, tight zoning laws, and the promotion of
compact and mixed-use development patterns (CSE, 2017).

Another research, conducted by the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), emphasised
the need of sustainable urban planning and the promotion of compact and mixed-use
development patterns in the DMA to avoid urban sprawl. To encourage sustainable urban
expansion, the study underlined the importance of integrating land-use and transportation
planning. To decrease urban sprawl in the DMA, the research proposed the creation of a
sustainable transportation system, the conservation of natural habitats, and the promotion
of mixed-use development patterns (NIUA, 2015).

The World Bank's "Transforming Cities with Transit" report addressed the importance of
public transportation in minimising urban sprawl and fostering sustainable urban growth.
To lessen reliance on private autos, the research underlined the need of prioritising
expenditures in public transit over road infrastructure. To prevent urban sprawl in cities
throughout the world, including the DMA, the study advised the creation of integrated
transportation networks, the promotion of mixed-use development patterns, and the
conservation of natural ecosystems (World Bank, 2013).

To summarise, the literature on urban sprawl in the DMA emphasises the importance of
sustainable urban planning, the promotion of compact and mixed-use development
patterns, and the creation of a comprehensive public transportation infrastructure in order
to decrease urban sprawl in the DMA. To encourage sustainable urban expansion in the
DMA, the literature highlights the importance of integrating land-use and transportation
planning, prioritising investments in public transit, and protecting natural habitats.
