Figure 3.1: (a) Hub topology and (b) bus topology for distribution networks
Ø Figure 3.2 shows the ring and star topologies for LAN
applications
Ø In the ring topology , consecutive nodes are connected by
point-to-point links to form a closed ring
Ø Each node can transmit and receive the data by using a
transmitter–receiver pair, which also acts as a repeater
Ø A token (a predefined bit sequence) is passed around the
ring
Ø Each node monitors the bit stream to listen for its own
address and to receive the data

Ø Diffraction-based Demultiplexers
Ø use an angularly dispersive element, such as a
diffraction grating, which disperses incident light
spatially into various wavelength components
Ø Interference-based Demultiplexers use the folowing
devices
Ø optical filters

Ø Local Oscillator
Ø The basic idea behind coherent detection consists of
combining the optical signal coherently with a
continuous-wave (CW) optical field before it falls on
the photo detector(see Fig. 10.1)
Ø The CW field is generated locally at the receiver using a
narrow line width laser, called the local oscillator (LO)
