Introduction

Longitudinal Profile is a surveying activity used to show the ground elevation in a

certain long direction, this activity is required to design such projects as roads,
canals, cables, sewers, ground slops. Using the Level as a main instrument with
the help of tape, etc. using to ways to calculate the results The Trapezoidal
Method and The Sempson Method.

Description card of points in the road field with the field level readings:
Methodology:

In this practical its needed to survey the internal road route using the levelling
measured profiling and volume computation.

Firstly, the equipment’s used are:

Steel rod

Level with staff

tape

Secondly the working way was picking up a point on the street and place the
levelling in a point known as point A and started to level 4 points in front of the
level and 4 points at the backsight of the level. The tape was used for measuring
distance between the level and the points, first point was a 10m in front of the
level and the second point was 10 m from the first point and the third point was
10m from the second point and the last point was located as 40m distance from
the level and the same was done for the opposite side from the level with 4
points of total 40m. the total distance of the road was 80m long, after locating
the 8 points we located the staff and started measuring for all points with the
same mechanism.
Types of errors which results wrong readings:
There are personal errors such as pointing, distances measured by tape and
wrong bubble centering of the staff.

Instrument errors such as.

Index error and wrong centering of horizontal circle

These types of errors can lead to wrong reading and wrong surveying data.

BS IS FS
A 2.67 102.67 100
B 2.37 100.3
C 2 100.67
D 1.7 100.97
E 1.1 101.57
F 0.912 101.758
G 0.823 101.847
H 0.56 102.11
SUM 2.67 8.905 0.56
Computational checks:

No of BS= No of FS =1

∑BS-∑FS=2.67-0.56=2.11 Ok

Level of last point – Elevation of 1st point = 102.11-100=2.11 Ok

Volume of cut calculation:

Volume of cut 141.06
Area of cut=S/3[h1+hn+2(h3+h5+…..+hn-2)+4(h2+h4+…..+hn-1)]

Volume of cut = A*b

b=diameter + side clearance

b= 0.07+0.25+0.25=0.57
