Joko Widodo, Jokowi's nickname, was born June 21, 1961, Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. Joko
Widodo was born to Widjiatno Notomihardjo and Sudjiatmi. He is the eldest child and the only son of
four siblings. He has three younger sisters named Iit Sriyantini, Ida Yati, and Titik Relawati. Jokowi
married Iriana in Surakarta on December 24, 1986, and has 3 children, namely Gibran Rakabuming Raka,
Kahiyang Ayu, and Kaesang Pangarep.

Jokowi is an Indonesian businessman, politician and government official, who served as Governor of
Jakarta from 2012 to 2014 and as president of Indonesia 2014 to present. Joko Widodo, commonly
known as Jokowi, who has attracted international attention with his populist campaigning style and anti-
corruption platform, became the first Indonesian president who does not have a military background or
belongs to one of the country's leading political families, his success in opinion polls is seen by many.
observers as the beginning of a new era of more democratic Indonesian politics.

In 2014, the PDI-P chose Jokowi as its candidate for Indonesia's presidential election, which was held on
9 July. He won with more than 53 percent of the popular vote, beating former general Prabowo
Subianto. When Jokowi entered the presidency, he identified decisive action – reducing corruption as
one of his top priorities and as a necessary step to attract more foreign direct investment into the
country. He also pushed for a nine-point plan for Indonesia that emphasizes helping the poor by
improving public services, implementing land reform, and developing more affordable housing, among
other measures.
