riday, Marc h 31 Growing up on the farm we would
always have fresh eggs.
I remember our Dad and Mom,
Ivan and Betty Brandt, would order
baby chicks each spring. Dad would
pick them up at the depot in Nashua.
At that time the depot sat on the north
side of the tracks. Now the depot is the
current Nashua Senior Citizens Center
on the south side.
The chicks would spend a few
days in our entryway under a heat
lamp until they were ready to go out
to our small chicken coop. From there
they would be transferred to the large
chicken coop once they were old
enough.
In later years when the depot
closed Dad would get the chicks at the
Farmers Union Grain Elevator.
Of course with having chickens
we would butcher some every year.
This was one chore I did not like
and would always find some excuse
to get out of it. But we always had
fresh chickens for a wonderful meal
prepared by Mom.
Another chore that none of us
could get out of was cleaning that
chicken coop every spring. We would

Getting back to the chicks, my point here is that we
need to get back to raising chickens so we have those
fresh eggs. I had the chore of going out to the chicken
coop and collecting the eggs. At times we would have to
reach under the hen to get the egg(s). We usually had
plenty of eggs. And with our large family we would eat a
lot of eggs. We even took egg sandwiches for our lunch
Flea Market when we were farming. There was nothing better than a
fried egg sandwich. Sure would be nice to have one now.

 Mmmm.... Flowers!
One of the coolest moose photos we’ve seen here in
Valley County is this one taken by Rocky Zimdars, right
out his back door. This one (we’re thinking it’s the same
one that has been admired by many through the course
of the winter) was sniffing some flowers and thinking of a
tasty snack. Turns out they are Dee Dee’s lighted patio
flowers! We wonder if this moose will take up permanent
residency or get lonesome for love and move back home.
