Who are we?

The Who We Are unit is a unit of inquiry in which children will be
encouraged to learn about themselves and others through their
experiences.
The children will be building and sustaining positive
relationships with their peers through unstructured and structured play
opportunities.
Prepare materials prior to the class:
- A World Map or world globe
- A variety of families photos
- Clothes f rom different cultures or photos
- Name tags and markers
- Types of houses
- Disposable cameras(family photos, food, clothing, types of houses, world map)

Place
the materials and objects around the room. Ask students to walk around the room exploring the materials with a
partner.  Ask students what questions came to their mind when they were exploring?

 Possible student questions: Where do people live? Why do we look different? Who is in your family?

If this is the first time students have generated their own questions, they may need prompting by the teacher. Once students have had time to explore the
objects, bring the whole class together to share ideas and questions. From these questions, you will work with students to brainstorm more questions on the
Wonder Wall (我想知道为什么)

Follow
the lead of the students. If you are an immersion teacher, you can use language that is appropriate for the level of the students. If  you have limited
time with your students, you may want to focus on one question –
for example: Where do people live?Theme: Where do people live? Draw an outline of the
local area on large paper. Take
a neighborhood walk to observe what is around their school. (Students will use disposable cameras to document what they
see.) Make flashcards of shops, parks etc., in Chinese.Children can recreate their neighborhood using boxes, craft materials etc.,Use the flashcards to label each
item on the large paper.
