To truly understand the values, we hold and live by, a candid and honest look at
the way we were raised is essential to identifying the values instilled in us as
adults. It's the first step in. Sometimes there are some beliefs that influence the
way we think. This is a common question people ask at family gatherings. For
example, what do you do for a living? I've seen people react very defensively to
this question. Suppose people have choices in their career paths, and their
choices reflect who they are and what they value. Our experiences and beliefs
are part of what makes us who we are, but they can influence the way we think,
act, and behave. So, it’s important that we develop a self-awareness so that we
can learn to check that this will not happen in the future.
5. Fr. Frank Lynch – defined PAKIKISAMA as the ability to get along with each
others in such way as to avoid signs of conflict. Camaraderie among Filipino
makes them flexible and easy to be with.
These three basic aims of Filipino values; hiya, pakikisama and utang na loob
make a Filipino an individual with unique moral obligation to treat one another
resulting to community ties. These values make Filipinos friendly, hospitable,
polite & loyal. In brief, the Filipino core values influence how they behave in any
situation.
