REPORT

On 23rd December 2022, the Department of Zoology organized a field visit to

Sericulture Unit at Gurav Pimpri, Tal. Karjat. Almost all the M.Sc. colleagues and other

friends from S.Y.B.Sc. along with teachers were present in the field visit.

Mrs. Kulange Madam, owner of the Sericulture unit provided us all the necessary

information regarding construction of Rearing House, DFL’s, incubation of eggs and black

boxing, brushing, arrangement of Rearing stands, types of rearing trays, disinfection, Bed

changing during each moult, advantages of branch/ shoot feeding, importance of Serimore

(supplement) and Vijeta, mounting and use of chandrika for cocooning, harvesting of cocoon,

grainage (storage and collection of cocoons) etc.

We discussed some important aspects of Sericulture like preliminary requirements

to start the Sericulture business, Government policies (subsidy), required agricultural land as

per the number of DFL’s, DFL centers, Cocoon market, cocoon grades, rates per Kgs., Types

of possible diseases as per the local environment, Varieties of Mulberry best suits in this area

etc. Mrs. Kulange Madam answered all the questions and provided all the required

information to students.

After visiting Rearing house, we had visited the Mulberry plantation, where 2-acre

land was used for mulberry plantation. Long lasting K-2 variety of Mulberry was used for

moriculture. Mulberry plantation was nicely maintained and best qualities of leaves were

observed. Mulberry fruits over there was delicious and we enjoyed a lot.

After fruitful discussion and on-site visit, we all returned to college campus at

05:00 pm.
OBSERVATIONS

The mulberry plant used was of long-lasting K-2 variety of genus Morus indica.

The mulberry plant is deciduous plant and can be grown in temperate region. Morus indica is

popular or preferred variety of mulberries for sericulture.

Mulberry plant leaves provides perfect food for growing silkworms and so the

quality of silk can be obtained.

Also, the fruits of mulberries contain significant amounts of Vitamin C, Iron and

other micronutrients along with carbohydrates and little fraction of proteins.

Silkworms feed on mulberry leaves all the time and cocoon formation take place.

Chandrika is used for the cocoon formation.

Serimore is a plant extract-based feed supplement used as growth promoter for

silkworms and increase their larval feeding period.

Vijetha is a silkworm bed disinfectant used against all possible diseases in local

environment.
