INTRODUCTION

A. Background
English is not a foreign language for now. English has now become the second mother
language after Indonesian. This is due to the unifying English between countries in all
parts of the world, in order to facilitate communication that exists between the two.
Therefore, English has been introduced from an early age. Starting from learning to
interpret and memorize words to stringing several words into one sentence. In English, we
recognize many kinds of sentences both based on the time when the sentence occurs and
the structure of the words that form the sentence itself.
In English, there are several words that get special treatment. This word is usually called
modals. Where there are special provisions in its use. There are several forms of the word
modals. Therefore, this mini research study will study English in accordance with the
correct structure, so that it is not wrong to use capital and it does not cause a wrong
meaning.

B. Purpose
The objectives of this mini research are:
1. To find out the meaning of capital.
2. To learn types and examples of sentences modals.
3. To know the function of capital.

5. To understand the correct structure of capital.

C. Benefits of Activities
The benefits of this mini research are that it can be used as a learning reference material
and can add insight and knowledge.

CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL BASIS

The modality (verb) in English is an additional verb that is commonly used to express a
modality (such as possibility, obligation). Modal verbs can be distinguished from other
verbs by looking at their characteristics, namely the absence of participles orforms
infinitive, as well as the fact that these modal verbs do not end in - (e) s when dealing with
singular pronouns persona . Its function is to express willingness (Will) or ability (ability),
necessity (need) and possibility (possibility).

There are several types of capital, namely:

1. Can (can, can, maybe, may)
Can used to declare the ability (ability), modal verb thiscan be used to request permission.
For example:
- Can I borrow your car for one night?
- I can't swim, I cannot swim
- You can go now

2. Could (can, bisa) in the form of past (past), and (maybe, mau) in the form of future
(future).
verb capital Thiscan be used to ask permission (permission) to do something in the past
(past) or future (future).
For example:
- You could run faster than me two years ago?
- I could fly an airplane when I was in the API
- Could I use your computer to print and scan?

3. May (maybe, can)

May to state the possibility (present) in the present (present) and future (future). verb
capital Thisto ask for permission (permission) is more formal than verbcapital can.

2
For example:
- May I go home now?
- We may be buying a new house
- I may come tomorrow if I have time.
4. Might (with relatively small probability)
Just like may, verb capital thisis used to express the possibility (possibility) in the
present (present) and future (future). Might can be added primary auxiliary verb have to
express probability in the past (thepast). verb capital Thisis used to express a hypothetical
situation that is proven not to have happened, as opposed to an unproven may. Might is a
past form of may which is used to ask for permission (permission) more formal than
capital verb could.
For example:
- It isn't cloudy at present, but I think it might rain this afternoon
- The doctor might have warned you not to eat red meat.
- If I have cleaned the room, might I play with my friend?

5. Must (must, must, sure)

Must state prohibition (prohibition), Capital ofverb this expressing obligation () or
necessitynecessity (necessity).
For example:
- You mustn't give up.
- He musn't tell me.
- We must go to bed now.

6. Shall (will, may, must)

Shall [British English] is used to denote simple future just like will however only used
in first person (first person) I and we. Shall [US English] rarely used other than for polite
questions for first person. This capital verb is used to express an obligation in a formal
situation (which can be legal documents or at meetings. In this situation, both second and
third person can be used with this modal verb.

3
For example:
- We shall overcome it someday.
- I shall see you tomorrow.
- Shall we go?

7. Should (should, should)

Should to give suggestion (suggestion) or advice (advice).
For example:
- If you have a toothache, you should see the dentist.
- You shouldn't so pessimistic
- You should see the doctor.

8. Will (will, will)

Will to express willingness (willingness). Willingness can be expressed inconditional
type 1sentence or invitation (invitation / invitation). Will to make predictions. modal verb
Thisis for making decisions spontaneous / without a plan (simple future tense).
For example:
- I will help you if you help yourself first.
- I will go now
- Things will be all right

9. Would (will, want, maybe)

Same as will, a modal verb this can be used for expressing willingness (willingness),
but more polite (polite). This capital verb expresses a sense of probability . Would
combined with auxiliary have to form conditional sentence type 3. Would here to state the
action you want to take in the past.

4
For example:
- Would you like to see my craft?
- He would be free tonight.
- If you had remembered to invite me, I would have attended your party.
Certain verbs are sometimes, although not always, classified as modal verbs, such as:
- ought to

For example: I ought to wear high quality running shoes.
Verbs that can act as modal verbs and can also act as regular verbs are called verbs
