1. A microbiology graduate is working on a project involving a pathogenic laboratory


strain of Vibrio cholerae.

(a) State the risk group of the Vibrio cholera.


(1 mark)

(b) Describe why the Vibrio cholerae is grouped in the above-mentioned risk
group.
(4 marks)

(c) Predict TWO (2) incidences of biosafety mishaps in the laboratory while
handling the Vibrio cholerae.
(2 marks)

(d) For each of the selected incidences identified in (c), describe the
precautionary measures required to protect or minimise the effect of the
incidences.

2. You are working as a medical technologist in one of the advanced research centre.
One day, a specimen of saliva sample arrived at your laboratory to test for the
presence of Ebola virus.

(a) Identify the risk group of the microorganisms and biosafety level that is
required to be fulfilled by the laboratory.

(b) Discuss the containment requirements for safe handling of the Ebola virus.
