Class II Cavity Preparation

Standard Class II Guidelines

• This should be a “step” cavity preparation


• The proximal box should extend just beyond the
contact point
• The occlusal portion should be 2mm in depth
• The occlusal portion should be no more than 1/3
of the inter-cuspal width, preferably just a bur width
• The occlusal portion should extend as far as the
transverse ridge but not break it

• Many different products such as V Ring or

• Use of a dedicated anatomical wedge, a sectional
matrix and a holding ring
• The ring provides separation of the teeth
compensating for the thickness of the matrix
• More predictable shaping of the proximal surface
as recontoured
