Lesson: 11.

2: Solve 2- step word problems (day 2)

Objective: Today we will solve 2-step word problems involving different operations by
writing and solving equations. (Have student read from slide)
Warm-up: Multiplication and division fact review (haven’t used x and / in a while and
need it for this unit)
Whole Group: Solve/ Share:
 Solve and Share  Read problem aloud
 Visual Learning  Follow anchor chart steps to mark up the word problem (“What do we
 Convince Me look for next?”)
 Guided Practice (#3)  “What is the equation that can answer the hidden question//obvious
question?” (Write out equations, then they solve)
 After they solve, I solve the problems with student input.
 ***Remind them to label their answer
Visual Learning (carpet):
 Pause 1: Turn/talk
 Pause 2: vote with fingers (options 1-4)
 Pause 3: Turn/ talk
 Pause 4: Do you have to use the variable t to represent the unknown
number? (no, you can use any letter)
Convince me:
 Read problem
 Get student input on how to mark up word problem (underline hidden
and obvious question, mark obvious question with multiplication sign,
unknown question with division sign
 They solve on own, then discuss with table partner
 Have select students share out

Guided practice:
 Number 3, when they are finished and checked, they can move to ind.
work
Small group Group 1
Together/ partially modeled:
 Review anchor chart
 Display word problem on yellow chart paper. Ask them step by step
how to mark up the problem. (use different colors for hidden and
obvious question)
 Decide what equations will be used (hidden: 9x2, obvious: y÷3)
 They write problems on whiteboards and solve, then we discuss.
Together, less modeling:
 On worksheet, read question 1
 Mark up word problem together (“What to do we look for next? What
operation will we use? How do you know?”)
 Write out equations together and they solve. Then go over it
Independently
 I read problem 2 aloud, they follow steps on anchor chart to solve
independently.

Independent Work  Page 581, numbers 4, 5

 Page 582, numbers 6, 7
 When they are finished, they can log onto Dreambox for assigned
lessons.
Closing Review key words in word problems that help to identify the operation used:
 Review key words anchor chart.
 Present slides of word problems and ask table groups to identify the key
words and what operations they signal to use.
