Dear Learner,

Good day!

In this week, you will learn to compute probabilities corresponding to a

given random variable (M11/12SP-IIIa-6), illustrate the mean and variance of a
discrete random variable (M11/12SP-IIIb-1), and calculate the mean and the
variance of a discrete random variable (M11/12SP-IIIb-2).

Specifically, you will learn the following:

1. compute probabilities corresponding to a given random variable;
2. illustrate the mean and the variance of a discrete random variable; and
3. calculate the mean and the variance of a discrete random variable;

Activity 3 Read and analyze the topics in Lesson 1.

You and your friends have just measured the heights of your dogs (in millimeters):

The heights (at the shoulders) are: 600mm,

470mm, 170mm, 430mm and 300mm.

Find out the Mean, the Variance, and the

Standard Deviation.

Your first step is to find the Mean:

600+470+170+430+300]
Mean = [
5
1970
= 5
Mean = 394
So, the mean (average) height is 394 mm.

Mean of a Discrete Random Variable

The Mean 𝜇 of a discrete random variable is the central value or average of its
corresponding probability mass function. It is also called as the Expected
Value. It is computed using the formula:

𝜇 = Σ[𝑥 • 𝑃(𝑥)]
Where x is the outcome and P(x) is the probability of the outcome.

2
STEPS IN FINDING THE MEAN
Step 1: Construct the probability distribution for the random variable X
representing the height of each dog.
Step 2: Multiply the value of the random variable X by the corresponding
probability.
Step 3: Add the results obtained in Step 2. Results obtained is the mean of the
probability distribution.

Now we calculate each dog's difference from the Mean:

To calculate the Variance, take each difference, square it, and then average the
result:
Variance:
(206)2 + (76)2 + (−224)2 + (36)2 + (−94)2
𝜎2 =
5
4236 + 5776 + 50176 + 1296 + 8836
=
5
108,520
=
5
2
𝜎 = 21,704
So the Variance is 21,704

The Standard Deviation is just the square root of Variance, so:

Standard Deviation
Σ = √21,704
= 147.32...
Σ = 147 (to the nearest mm)

The good thing about the Standard Deviation is that it is useful. Now we can show
which heights are within one Standard Deviation (147mm) of the Mean:

So, using the Standard Deviation we have a "standard" way of knowing what is
normal, and what is extra-large or extra small.

Rottweilers are tall dogs, and Dachshunds are a bit short, right?

Variance and Standard Deviation of a Random Variable

The variance and standard deviation are two values that describe how scattered
or spread out the scores are from the mean value of the random variable.

The variance, denoted as σ², is determined using the formula:

σ² = ∑(x − µ)²•P(x)

The standard deviation σ is the square root of the variance, thus,

σ² = √∑(x − µ)² • P(x)

Where 𝜎² – variance, 𝜇 - the mean, 𝜎 – standard deviation,

P(x) – probability of the outcome x - outcome

3
STEPS IN FINDING THE VARIANCE AND STANDARD DEVIATION
1. Find the mean of the probability distribution.
2. Subtract the mean from each value of the random variable X.
3. Square the result obtained in Step 2.
4. Multiply the results obtained in Step 3 by the corresponding probability.
5. Get the sum of the results obtained in Step 4. Results obtained is the value of
the variance of probability distribution.
