Speaking of mindless stuff...

So, I'm curious. You got your

MIM Road Worn: 3 Single Coil Route - One CNC

Hole

American Standard: HSH Route(a little different

from the two below) - One CNC Hole

MIM Standard: Same HSH Route - Three CNC

Holes

MIM Road Worn Player: Same HSH Route -

Three CNC Holes

I'm not seeing a pattern. Anyone?

MIM Road Worn & American Standard both have

1 hole.
MIM Standard & MIM Road Worn Player both
have 3 holes.

That's the
hold down' points of the machine that cuts and
shapes the bodies. No special reason for why
they are where they are or how many, other than
they must not show when assembled.

I've got two Strats without them, I think it's two

at least. I know that my FR Std has none and I
believe my Blacktop has none. Both have pool
routes.

Well, my 1976 doesn't have any. And pickup

routes are tighter, more rounded and closer to
the shape of the single coil pickups. Also the
wiring runs down the center line of the body, and
again is a pretty tight cavity, so the wires are
neatly bundled from the factory.

They are guides for the CNC machine, apparently.

I don't agree.

I think they're for rapid ID in a manufacturing and

assembly facility where different models are
being manufactured side by side. This enables
snap identification of bodies during shaping,
sanding, coating and polishing, and later
throughout assembly. The labels are nice but
they're not always affixed yet and they're small
and it takes too much time during some phases
of the operation to be looking at those labels
when you can ID a body so quickly with these
"crop circle" holes.

The way I see it, there's simply too many Fender

production models with no holes of this kind at
all, and yet those are successfully CNC'd.
Likewise, guys like Allparts and Warmoth and
Guitar Mill and USACG successfully CNC
masses of guitar bodies and don't employ holes
like these at all. I understand the small pin router
holes on the contemporary Fender Custom Shop
reproductions of old 50s and 60s guitars are just
for appearance sake.
