MODAL AUXILIARY VERBS: MAY,

MIGHT, MUST, SHOULD, OUGHT TO


• May (poder) – expressa:
permissão: May I come in?
possibilidade: It may rain tonight.

• Might (poder) expressa:


permissão mais formal: Might I come in?
possibilidade mais remota: It might rain
tonight.

• Must (dever) expressa:
obrigação: Everybody must come early.
dedução: You are pale. You must be sick.
proibição: You mustn’t smoke here.
conselho: You must see that play. It’s hilarious.

Must pode ser substituído por have to, quando a obrigação é externa à
pessoa que fala (uma lei, uma ordem recebida).
I have to put out the cigarette before
getting in the restaurant.

Usa-se had to para expressar obrigação no passado.


My brother and I had to wash our school uniforms
when we were teenagers.
