TOPIC INFINITIVES, GERUNDS AND NOUN CLAUSES

Use phrases, clauses and sentences appropriately and
meaningfully
LEARNING Code: Objectives:
COMPETENCY EN7G-II-v.a-1 * Define gerunds, infinitives and noun clauses; and,
* Identify gerunds, infinitives and noun clauses in the
sentence.

UNDERSTAND
Infinitives, Gerunds, Noun Clauses
Study the following sentences:
1. Many are interested to buy plants.
2. Collecting plants involves buying.

Notice the underlined words in the sentences.

• On sentence number 1, it uses the word to added by the action word buy
• On sentence number 2, it is in -ing form of the verb.
Although these examples are not originally nouns, but both underlined words function as a noun in the
sentence.
• The phrase to buy is an example of an infinitive, while buying is an example of gerund.

What are infinitives?

A. Infinitives are verb phrases that begin with the preposition “to” followed by an action verb (to+
action verb). Infinitives can function as a noun, also as an adjective, or adverb.
Note: For this week, the infinitives that will be discussed are the ones that function as a noun.

Examples:
1. To shop during General Community Quarantine (GCQ), one must have a quarantine
pass.

To + shop (to + action verb) is the infinitive within the infinitive phrase “To shop during
General Community Quarantine (GCQ)”

2. To travel these days, can be stressful.

To + travel is the infinitive within the infinitive phrase “To travel these days.

What is a Gerund?

B. A gerund is a verb ending in –ing that is used as a noun and answers the question what?

Example:
Reading widens one’s vocabulary.

The verb reading functions as a noun in this sentence. It also answers the question, “What widens
one’s vocabulary?”

2

The basic idea of gerund is that, the action word is used as a thing or idea and not as a physical
activity.
Example: He is swimming fast. (Swimming indicates a physical action, so it is NOT a gerund)
Swimming is his favorite sport. (Swimming is an answer to the question what is his
favorite sport? So, it is a gerund)

C. A noun clause is a dependent clause that acts as a noun. Noun clauses begin with words such
as how, that, what, whatever, when, where, whether, which, whichever, who, whoever, whom,
whomever, and why.

Examples: 1. It is unsure how long shall we wait till the vaccine for COVID-19 will be available.
2. Do you know what pandemic means?
3. Whoever disobeys the guidelines of General Community Quarantine will be
penalized.
