Lesson 4.1
Triangle Congruence Postulates
(ASA and SSS Congruence Postulates)

What’s In
Given the illustration below, use the markings to name the corresponding congruent parts
and the congruent triangles.
Corresponding Angles:
______, _______, _______
Corresponding Sides:
_______, _______, ______
Congruent Triangles:
_______, _______, ______

_______, _______, ______

What’s New
Triangle congruence postulates gives us some ways to show that two triangles are
congruent given less number of corresponding congruent parts. But before we study these
postulates, let as identify first the parts of a triangle in terms of their relative positions.
Complete the statements below using the definition given.
Included angle is the angle between two sides of a triangle.
Included side is the side common to two angles of a triangle .

∠𝑆 is an included angle between ____ and ____ .

∠𝑊 is an ______________ between ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑆𝑊 and ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑊𝐴.
̅̅̅̅̅ and 𝑆𝐴
_____ is an included angle between 𝑊𝐴 ̅̅̅̅.
̅̅̅̅̅
𝑆𝑊 is an _____________ between ∠𝑊 and ∠𝑆.
̅̅̅̅̅
𝑊𝐴 is an included side between _____ and ____.
_____ is an included side between ∠𝑆 and ∠𝐴.

What is It
Another Triangle Congruence are:

1. ASA (Angle-Side-Angle)

If two angles and the included side of the

triangle are congruent to the corresponding two
angles and the included side of another triangle,
then the triangles are congruent.

3
For example:

From the markings given above, we could say that ∠𝐴 ≅ ∠𝑋 (angle), ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐶 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝑄𝑅 (included
side) and ∠𝐵 ≅ ∠𝑌 (angle), then ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 ≅ ∆𝑋𝑌𝑍 by ASA Congruence Postulate.

Another Example:

This is an example of ASA because two of its

angles are congruent and one included side is
also congruent, then the two triangles are
congruent.

Another Example:
This is Not ASA because even though two of its
angles are congruent and one side is also
congruent, but the side is not an included side.
When we say included side, it means it is a side
between two congruent angles.

2. SSS (Side-Side-Side) Congruence Postulate

If three sides of one triangle are congruent to the

corresponding sides of another triangle, then the
triangles are congruent.

For example:

From the given markings in the illustration above, we could say that ̅̅̅̅
𝐵𝐶 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝑍𝑌 (side),
̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝑋𝑌
𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ (side), and 𝐴𝐶
̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝑋𝑍
̅̅̅̅ (side), then ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 ≅ ∆𝑋𝑌𝑍 by SSS Congruence Postulate.

Another example:
This is an example of SSS because the three
sides are congruent, then the two triangles are
congruent.

Another example:

This is an example of SSS because the three

sides are congruent, then the two triangles are
congruent.

4
What’s More

State whether these triangles are congruent by ASA, SAS, SSS or None.

What I have learned

In summary, I have learned the following:
1. _______________ is the angle between two sides of a triangle.
2. _______________ is the side common to two angles of a triangle.
3. The triangle congruent postulates are as follows:

a. The ____________________ states that if two sides and the included

angle of one triangle are congruent to the corresponding two sides and
the included angle of another triangle, then the triangles are congruent.

b. The ____________________ states that if two angles and the

included side of the triangle are congruent to the corresponding two
angles and the included side of another triangle, then the triangles are
congruent.

c. The ____________________ states that if three sides of one triangle

are congruent to the corresponding sides of another triangle, then the
triangles are congruent.

5
What I Can Do

State whether each pair of triangles is congruent by SSS, SAS, ASA, or none.

6
