and how many candies are left with Ermi?
a. 49 b. 4 , 4
c. 4, 15 d. 4, 0

(4) The given figure shows a number line. What is the value of A?
0 A 1
(5) Mr. Mohamed bought a plier, a computer mouse, and a heater. The plier and the computer mouse
cost RM102.23 and RM144.29, respectively. If he paid RM385 for all the three items, how much did
the heater cost?

17 17
money did she spend in all?
(9) Brendan was born on December 24, 2009. How old will he be on December 24, 2034?
(10) I am a 4-digit number. If my digits are reversed, I become a 3-digit number. What is the digit in my
ones place?
Solutions
(1) b. 4 , 4
Step 1
According to the question, 64 candies are to be distributed equally among 15 students. In order to
find the number of candies per student as well as the number of remaining candies, we must divide
64 by 15.
Step 2
On calculating the above, we get:
64
=4R4
15
Step 3
Hence, each student will get 4 candies while 4 candies remain with Ermi.
(2) 19
If we look at the pattern, we notice that 2 is being added to the previous number to get the
number succeeding it.
Therefore, the missing number = 17 + 2 = 19
Step 1
According to the question, the tens digit is 9 that is 6 more than the ones digit.
Therefore, the ones digit is 6 less than 9, i.e., 9 − 6 = 3.
Step 2
The hundreds digit is one third of the ones digit, i.e., 3 ÷ 3 = 1.
Step 3
So, by considering the fact that the thousands digit is triple the ones digit, the digit in the
thousands place is 3 × 3 = 9.
Step 4
Now, we have to place the numbers under their respective place values.
Th H T O
9 1 9 3
Th H T O
9 1 9 3
Step 5
We can read 9193 as ‘nine thousand one hundred ninety-three’.
(4)
Step 1
We can see that the given number line is divided into 5 equal parts and each part is
represented by some fractional value.
We find that the numerator increases as the number of parts increase.
Step 2
Let us find the fractional form of each part.
Part 1 = which means 1 part out of 5 equal parts.
Part 2 = which means 2 parts out of 5 equal parts.
Part 3 = which means 3 parts out of 5 equal parts.
Part 4 = which means 4 parts out of 5 equal parts.
5
Part 5 = (1) which means 5 parts out of 5 equal parts
5
Step 3
We find that ‘A’ represents 3 parts out of 5.
(5) RM138.48
Step 1
According to the question, Mr. Mohamed bought a plier, a computer mouse, and a heater at
different prices, for which he paid a total amount of RM385.
Step 2
Let us draw a table to understand the situation in a better way:
Plier Computer mouse Heater
RM102.23 RM144.29 ?
Step 3
Here, we can notice that to find the cost of the heater, we need to subtract the cost of the plier
and the computer mouse from the total amount.
Step 4
Thus, we get:
The total cost of all the items = Cost of the plier + Cost of the computer mouse + Cost of the
heater
or, RM385 = RM102.23 + RM144.29 + Cost of the heater
or, RM385 − RM102.23 − RM144.29 = Cost of the heater
or, RM138.48 = Cost of the heater
Step 5
Therefore, Mr. Mohamed paid RM138.48 to buy the heater.
(6) 5364
Step 1
Let us add the numbers 1241 and 4123 as below:
1241
+ 4123
5364
Step 2
Thus, the sum of 1241 and 4123 is 5364.
(7) 96 feet
Step 1
According to the question, the height of the flat is 71 feet while the height of the water tank is
25 feet.
Step 2
We know that by placing the water tank on the roof, the total height of the building increases.
So, in order to find the height of the water tank from the ground, we have to add the height of
the building and the water tank.
Step 3
Therefore, the height of the water tank from the ground = Height of the building + Height of
the water tank
= 71 feet + 25 feet
= 96 feet
Step 4
Hence, the height of the water tank from the ground is 96 feet.

Step 1
2 8
According to the question, Yui spent of her money on a handbag and more
17 17
money on a dress. Here, we have to find the total amount spent by Yui.
Step 2
Let us draw a diagram for the given problem.
Handbag:
2/
17
Dress:
2/ 8/ more
17 17
Step 3
If we look at the diagram carefully, we notice that the amount spent by Yui is divided into 17
equal parts where the 2 shaded parts show the cost of the handbag.
8
It is given that the cost of the dress is more than the cost of the handbag. It suggests
17
that 8 more parts are reserved for the cost of the purse.
Step 4
Thus, 10 out of 17 parts show the cost of the dress.
Step 5
Now, we have to find the total amount spent by Yui.
Total amount spent = Cost of the handbag + Cost of the dress
2 10
= +
17 17
12
=
17
Step 6
12
Thus, is the fraction of amount spent by Yui.

(9) 25 years
Step 1
According to the question, Brendan was born on December 24, 2009. We have to find the age
of Brendan on December 24, 2034.
Step 2
So, let us find the difference between the given years:
2034 − 2009 = 25
Step 3
Therefore, Brendan will be 25 years old on December 24, 2034.
(10) Zero
Step 1
Let us suppose that the 4-digit number is 3450.
Step 2
If we reverse the digits of the number, we will get 0543.
Step 3
0543 is actually a 3-digit number, i.e., 543.
Step 4
So, the ones digit of the 4-digit number must be 0 such that if we reverse the number, it
becomes a 3-digit number.
