Question:
In R.A. 10175, was the term information security defined? Why do you think the law
needs to, or NOT to define it? Do you think the law needs revision to catch-up with the world’s
fast-changing technology? Why or why not?

As we all know Information Security consists of set of rules, policies, guidelines, and
processes created and implemented to protect factual and organized information of every user
and system, that’s why, it is very important that information security is properly defined and
understood by everyone.
In the article stating Republic Act No. 10175, information security wasn’t clearly stated
as per to its own definition but creates an act entitled for it which is the “Cybercrime
Prevention Act of 2012”, wherein it was clearly defined that it is the job of every information
and communication industries to protect all sorts of operation including content production,
telecommunications, broadcasting electronic commerce, and data processing in cybers
(online/offline). This act ensures that all information should be safely accessed, secured, and
properly used in any aspect.
As stated, R.A. No. 10175 is one of the perfect examples of a law who clearly defined
what information security was and how it was connected and will be applied as per to people’s
actions in the society. We need this law/act to be well-defined and discussed, especially its
offenses, punishments, and causes, so that everyone will have an enough knowledge on how
this act can give rights in protecting user information and signifies the true purpose of
information security in our network society.
Laws are created for the betterment of our society in any aspect including in the
cyberworld and it is also considerable to have rooms of improvement and it is better if the law
will be always head-to-head with the fast-progressing era of technology. As they say, law is 5-
years behind an emerging technology and it is very vital at this time, this law should keep
abreast of the pace in order to prevent problems in the legal matter. It is also important to have
some revisions to maximize improvements and minimize the lapses. Consistency in the law
implementation and compliance of each person/user in following are also part of the revision
that must be put into proper application and development.
