Title: Short-Circuit Analysis in ETAP Software

Objectives

• Perform short circuit analysis of power system in ETAP

Procedure

The Power Station Short-Circuit Analysis program analyzes the effect of three-phase, line to-
ground, line-to-line and line-to-line-to-ground faults on the electrical distribution systems. This
type of faults are also called shunt faults. When the path of the load current is cut short because of
breakdown of insulation we say that a short circuit has occurred. There are two types of short
circuit dead short circuit and partial short circuit. A fault which bypass the entire load current
through itself are called metallic fault.

In this lab session I perform short circuit analysis of power system in ETAP. First I create a one
line diagram of the system by using ANSI standard symbols. The ratting of the generator is
2.5MW, 13.8 kV, %PF 80,%Eff 90 and the rated kV is 34.5 and X/R is 45.0. and use a circuit
breaker of different model 38PM40,15GHK750,5HK250. Than I draw a single line diagram of
power system in composite Network Net1 and set the parameters of different components. The
length of the Cables is 375 ft, 15KV and the Transformer type is Z and X/R. I perform a load flow
analysis and compare the results.
I perform a short circuit analysis, The Short Circuit case editor contains solution control variables.
I select the faulted bus. The Short Circuit calculations are conducted and reported in accordance
with the settings of the study case selected in the toolbar. Running a Short Circuit analysis will
generate an output report. I follow the complete procedure which was mentioned in the manual for
a short circuit analysis.

Conclusion

In this lab session I learn about the Short-Circuit analysis in ETAP Software. I perform a load flow
analysis and compare the results with the desired values. I perform a Short Circuit Analysis and
learn about the shunt faults and different types of shunt faults such as line to ground fault, line to
line fault, line to line to line fault, etc.
