CONTROL

EDITING

Assignment 1 For assignment 1 we will be focusing on Points and more specifically Control Point Editing. We are going to experiment with creating and moving points. Understanding how curves and lines react when control points are moved is very important to understanding NURBS modeling. Research You are to further research and examine point modeling and how it relates to the software you choose to use. You are also to play with the various software commands on your own to see what unexpected things arise during the process of the assignment. Make The first step of the assignment is to create a pattern or field of points in the x and y axis. The field should be constructed with the procedures that were discussed in the lecture (point, multiple point, point grid, etc..). The field of points should be rule based so that it has structure and concept behind it.

The second step of the process is to create a pattern of lines, curves, or both that have a relationship with your point field. When constructing these lines it is up to you as to how to create this pattern. You may or may not choose to use all of your points (use the points as a guide), lines may share points with each other, it can be a direct translation of the points, or a point selection process that creates a different curve pattern then the points. Explore the possibilities of point and line repetition, scaling, twisting, density, etc.

Checkpoint #1 Sept 8th. You should have the first 2 steps completed by this date. Showing that you understand how to create a point field pattern, and are developing a curve pattern. You can have multiple curve pattern explorations for your instructors to evaluate and guide you down the most interesting path. The third step is to turn on the curve points. In this step you are to transition from a 2d drawing to a 3D drawing by manipulating the points in the Z-axis. Think carefully about each line and its relationship to the other lines. There is no limit to the number of moves you choose to make. The moves should be logical and be responsive to your pattern. You may also generate new curves in the Z direction.

The forth and final step will be the editing of the control point lines you just created. The idea is to rebuild your curves to see the effects of the rebuilding process. You are to focus on point addition and subtraction to see how this changes the geometry of the line. Also focus on the degree of the curve.

Constructing the Drawing. Each step of the process should be represented on the final board. It is important that you understand this as a process and how you graphically compose your work. If an image is used, it should be present on the board. You may also use labels and small amounts of text to describe your process. Placing unnecessary boxes around your steps is not desired, think about how you connect drawings and ideas to each other. Drawing Working in Layers are extremely important in all of softwares that you use. Keep point patterns on individual layers, Keep curves on layers. This will save time in the post production phase. Exporting Points can be done by: selecting points > File > Print > Pdf. This will give you vector points for illustrator. Control Point Dashed lines should be available on min 4 curves. Exporting lines can be done by selecting the lines File > Export Selected > Save as Illustrator Note: You will have to set up the same view and save the view so that all of your drawings are in the same axonemetric view. Graphics : Text used should be no larger than 10pt. Font should be something that is simple, no cursive or curly fonts are ever allowed. Think Helvetica, info web, Eurostyle, League Gothic, Courier New. Also think about how you handle labels be creative here.

Limits The Pattern size should be kept within a realistic size, it should not be huge nor tiny. The Curves you create should also follow the same guidelines as the pattern. Considerations Think explicitly about how the points interact with the lines you create. Think in terms of patterning ( changes in depth, density, separation, etc..) How do you produce a dialogue among the field of points, lines created, and Z-axis manipulation? How are the points altered throughout the process Layout 11x17 Color (no black and white) Printed drawings showing all steps of the process. A narrative statement describing the process of the assignment. Additional information will be posted on the blog. Assigned: August 30 Due : September 6
