1.2 Network Connection

Network connection is the precondition for automated ultrasonic testing. A good network

connection status guarantees the normal operation of the testing system. Users can

choose (wired or wireless) network settings according to field testing needs.

1.2.1 Wired network settings

The wired network connection is to use a network cable to realize the interconnection

between the ultrasound module and the host PC. The operation steps of the wired

network setting are as follows:

1) Use a network cable to interconnect the network port of the workstation (the inside of

the workstation is wired to the router) and the interface of the ultrasound module. See

Fig. 1-3.

Wired network port of workstation

VGA port of Wired network port of

ultrasound module ultrasound module

Fig. 1- 3 Network cable connection

2) Plug the monitor into the VGA port of the ultrasound module. In Ultrasonic module

go to Setting-Info-Network, take Fig. 1-4 as an example, change the IP address and

subnet mask of the network settings. The subnet mask generally defaults to

255.255.255.0.

4
Fig. 1- 4 Ultrasonic module network settings

Note: The IP address here shall be an IP different from that of the

workstation, and the subnet mask generally defaults to 255.255.255.0.

3) After SuporUp enters the AUT mode, see Fig. 1-5, click the menu

Network-Setting. In the pop-up (Fig. 1-6) window, input the IP address of the

ultrasound module and mask in Fig. 1-4 in the setting window.

Fig. 1-5 Network Setting

4) After completing the above settings, the button in the upper left of the

SuporUp menu bar is displayed in green connection status, and the ultrasound

5
module screen displays "Network controlling...".

Note: Click to change it to , and the network connection is

disconnected.

1.2.2 Wi-Fi setting

The Wi-Fi network connection is a connection method that only needs to be equipped with

a Wi-Fi network card and a router. The operation steps of the Wi-Fi network setting are

as follows:

1) Insert the Wi-Fi network card into the ultrasound module interface.

Note: SyncScan X1 has built-in wireless network card, no need to equip an

additional one.

2) Plug the monitor into the VGA port of the ultrasound module. On the ultrasound

module, go to Setting-Info-WIFI. See Fig. 1-7. In the pop-up Wifi window, check

Auto IP and select the Wifi name (The name of the router that comes with the

workstation is GL-AR750S-XXX-5G) corresponding to the router to connect. Or

uncheck [Auto IP], and fix IP through IP settings, such as "wired connection".

Fig. 1-7 Wifi window

3) After the connection is completed, uncheck "Auto IP", the status is shown in Fig. 1-8
as an example. The current display shows that the GL-AR750S-6ef-5G is connected,

and its IP address is displayed in parentheses.

6
Fig. 1-8 Wifi connection

4) Open the SuporUp software, and set the network IP address under

Network-Setting menu to be the same as the IP address displayed by the

ultrasound module See Fig. 1-9.

Fig. 1-26.

Fig. 1-26 Encoder setting

1.4 Calibration

Calibration directly affects the final judgment of the test results. Calibrating on the

calibration test block according to the correct calibration steps is an indispensable step

for user operations.

1.4.1 Step 1:VelCal

The SoundPath calibration is carried out by using the P/E parameters of HotPass

zone, and the velocity calibration is realized by taking the arc on the phased array

calibration block as the CalibRefPoint. Calibrating a P/C zone is not available.

SoundPath calibration generally uses a test block with two known radius of curvature

to calibrate an angular phased array probe.

19
Fig. 1-27 VelCal

Steps:

1) Place the probe on the calibration block. See Fig. 24.

Fig. 1-28 Velocity and sound path calibration test block

2) In the "CalibRefPoint1"and "CalibRefPoint2" menu, set the radius value of 1, 2

(in this example, 50mm and 100mm). After the setting is completed, adjust the

"Gain" to make the echo amplitude around 80%. Move the probe back and forth

to get the highest echo of CalibRefPoint1.

3) Click the “Record” menu to set the value of “Record” to 1, which means to record
the echo position of CalibRefPoint1. Repeat step 2) to make the AWaveEcho of

CalibRefPoint2 pass through the center of the gate and get the highest wave of

CalibRefPoint2.

Click “Record” menu, which means to record the echo position of CalibRefPoint2 and

complete the calibration. If the calibration value of MaterialVel is not accepted, click

20
“ClearCalib” and repeat steps 2)~3).

1.4.2 Step 2:Fusion calibration

1.4.2.1 Fill sensitivity calibration

After entering the sensitivity calibration, the interface is as shown in Fig. 1-29:

Strip chart view Fig. 1-29 Sensitivity calibration

The steps of Fill channel sensitivity calibration are as follows:

1) After selecting the channel for calibration (taking "Fusion (US) F4 zone" as an

example), the remote control controls the PA probe to move to the vicinity of the

calibration reflector, and observe the gate echo in the A-wave until the probe stops at

the highest echo position of the calibrated reflector.

2) Adjust the parameters of StartEle (T) and StartEle (R) until it is determined that the

echo amplitude under the current StartEle is the highest. Click AdjustGain to

automatically change the gain of echo amplitude to 80%. See Fig. 1-30:

21
Fig. 1-30 Adjust StartEle

Note: The small red dot in the gate of View A is the peak record point for

recording the highest amplitude. Click “ResetPeak” and the software will

refresh the small red dot record.

3) Click DelayCal to calibrate the calibration echo. After DelayCal, the values of S,

D, R, P are updated. See Fig. 1-31, where the delay deviation P is set to 0.

Note: The delay deviation P represents the relative gate position, which is the

distance between the echo signal and the weld fusion line. When P value is 0, it

means the defect is located on the fusion/bond line.

Fig. 1-31 DelayCal

22
4) Adjust the remote control and control the probe to pass the calibration reflector

and its adjacent upper and lower reflectors (in the same zone) to test whether it

meets the requirements. (In the example, the adjacent reflector is lower than the

calibration reflector by -6dB~-24dB). If it meets the requirements. See Fig. 1-32,

the sensitivity calibration of the channel is completed.

Fig. 1-32 Fill F4 zone sensitivity calibration and verification

Note:

a) The upper reflector in the top zone F6 and the lower reflector in the bottom

zone F1 of the Fill do not need to meet the requirements of -6dB~-24dB

lower than the calibration reflector, but only need to be lower than the

amplitude of the main reflector.

b) If the calibration verification in step 4) fails, try to adjust "RefAngle" and

"Aperture" and then repeat steps 2) -step 4) till the calibration pass.

c) When performing sensitivity calibration, in addition to observing the A view,

click on the sensitivity calibration interface to start scanning, and the

displayed strip chart interface can more intuitively read the echo

amplitude difference of adjacent reflectors. The strip chart is shown in Fig.

1-33, and the meaning is shown in Table 2-1.

1) Taking the "Fusion (US) HotPass2" channel as an example, the remote control

controls the PA probe to stop at the highest echo position of the calibration

reflector.

2) Adjust StartEle until it is determined that the echo amplitude under the current

StartEle is the highest. Click AdjustGain to adjust the echo amplitude to 80%.

3) Click DelayCal to calibrate the calibration echo.

4) Adjust the remote control to control the probe to pass the calibration reflector and

its adjacent upper and lower reflectors (in the same zone), and test whether the

adjacent reflector shall be lower than the calibration reflector by -6dB~-24dB as

required. If it meets the requirements, see Fig. 1-34, the sensitivity calibration of

24
this channel is completed.

Fig. 1-34 HotPass HP2 zone sensitivity calibration and verification

Note:

a) The upper reflector in the uppermost Zone HP2 and the lower reflector

in the lowermost Zone HP1 of HotPass do not need to meet the

requirements of -6dB~-24dB lower than the calibration reflector, but

only require to be lower than the amplitude of the main reflector.

b) If the calibration verification in step 4) fails, try to adjust RefAngle and

Aperture and then repeat steps 2) -step 4) till the calibration passes.

1.4.2.3 LCP sensitivity calibration

The sensitivity calibration steps of LCP are as follows:

1) Select "Fusion (US) LCP", the remote control controls the PA probe to stop at

the highest echo position of the calibration reflector.

2) Adjust StartEle until it is determined that the echo amplitude under the current

StartEle is the highest. Click AdjustGain to adjust the echo amplitude to 80%.

3) Click DelayCal to calibrate the calibration echo.

4) Adjust the remote control to control the probe to pass the calibration reflector and

its adjacent upper and lower reflectors, and test whether the adjacent reflectors

meet the requirements of the echo amplitude shall be lower than the calibration

reflector. If it meets the requirements. See Fig. 1-35, and complete the sensitivity

25
calibration of this channel.

Fig. 1-35 LCP (LCP zone) sensitivity calibration and verification

Note:

If the calibration verification in step 4) fails, try to adjust RefAngle and

Aperture and then repeat steps 2) -step 4) till the calibration passes.

1.4.2.4 Root zone sensitivity calibration

The sensitivity calibration procedure of the Root zone is the same as that of LCP. See

2.4.1.3 for details, and the calibration verification is shown in Fig. 1-36.

Fig. 1-36 Root zone (R zone) sensitivity calibration and verification

Note: Since there is no lower reflector in the Root zone, when performing sensitivity

calibration verification, it is only necessary to meet the requirement that the

adjacent upper reflector shall be lower than the echo amplitude of the calibration

reflector.

1.4.2.5 Cap sensitivity calibration

The procedure of Cap sensitivity calibration is the same as that of LCP. See 2.4.1.3 for

26
details, and the calibration verification is shown in Fig. 1-37.

Fig. 1-37 Cap (CAP zone) sensitivity calibration and verification

Note: Since Cap does not have an upper reflector, when performing sensitivity

calibration verification, it is required to meet the requirement that the adjacent

lower reflector shall be lower than the echo amplitude of the calibration reflector.

1.4.3 Step 3: Volumetric calibration

1.4.3.1 Volumetric sensitivity calibration

The Volumetric channel sensitivity calibration steps are as follows:

1) Taking "Volumetric (US) V3" as an example, the remote control controls the PA

probe to stop at the highest echo position of the calibration reflector.

2) Adjust StartEle until it is determined that the echo amplitude under the current

StartEle is the highest. Click AdjustGain to adjust the echo amplitude to 80%.

3) Click DelayCal to calibrate the calibration echo.

4) Adjust the remote control to control the probe to pass through the calibration

reflector and its adjacent upper and lower reflectors, and test whether the

adjacent reflector meets the requirements of the echo amplitude of the adjacent

reflector shall be lower than the calibration reflector. If it meets the requirements,

see Fig. 1-38, and complete sensitivity calibration.

27
Fig. 1-38 Volumetric (V3) sensitivity calibration and verification

Note:

a) There is no upper reflector in Zone V1, the uppermost layer of

Volumetric. The sensitivity calibration of V1 only needs to verify that

the lower reflector is lower than the main reflector.

b) If the calibration verification in step 4) fails, try to adjust RefAngle and

Aperture and then repeat steps 2) -step 4) till the calibration passes.

1.4.3.2 Root Volumetric sensitivity calibration

The sensitivity calibration procedure of Root Volumetric is the same as Volumetric. See

2.4.2.1 for details, and the calibration verification is shown in Fig. 1-39.

Fig. 1-39 Root Volumetric (MAP zone) sensitivity calibration

Note: Since Root Volumetric does not have a lower reflector, when performing

sensitivity calibration verification, it is only necessary to meet the requirement that

the adjacent upper reflector shall be lower than the echo amplitude of the

calibration reflector.

28
1.4.4 Step 4: CouplingMonitor calibration

The steps of CouplingMonitor sensitivity calibration are as follows:

1) Ensure that the probe and the wedge are well coupled on the workpiece.

2) After selecting a group of coupling channels, set MeasGateThresh to 40%.

3) Move MeasGateStart and MeasGateWidth to make the measuring gate on the

A-view record the first BW of the workpiece.

4) Click AdjustGain, and the software will automatically adjust the BW to 80%

amplitude as the testing sensitivity.

Note: After completing the settings of all US channels according to steps 6 to 8,

click Sync to synchronize the US parameter settings to the downstream and

complete the settings of all channels.

1.4.5 Step 5: TOFD channel calibration

If the selected channel type is TOFD, the user needs to perform CalibZero and CalibPCS.

1.4.5.1 CalibZero

When the user enters the CalibZero interface, the interface is as shown in Fig. 1-40.

Fig. 1-40 CalibZero

 The CalibZero steps are as follows:

1) After the probe is well coupled with the wedge, dock the probes properly. See Fig.

1-41:

29
Fig. 1-41 Docking probes

2) Move the relative position of the two TOFD probes and observe the butt echo in

the gate of view A. See Fig. 1-42. When the echo amplitude is the highest, keep

the relative position of the two probes unchanged.

Fig. 1-42 Echo of probe docking

3) Click CalibZero, and Probe Delay will update automatically. Measure "d", and enter

the value of d/2 into "X_Value". See Fig. 1-43. Complete CalibZero.

Fig. 1-43 CalibZero finished

30
1.4.5.2 CalibPCS

When the user finishes CalibZero, it enters the next step CalibPCS. The interface is as Fig.

1-44.

Fig. 1-44 Time window

 The steps of CalibPCS are as follows:

1) Install the TOFD probe on the crawler, adjust the TOFD arm, and measure the

distance at the front end of the wedge as "PCS-d" for placement.

2) Set "RefPt", generally default to 0.

3) Adjust Range and DispDelay to make the LW (lateral wave) and BW (bottom

wave) completely and clearly displayed in the A view window. Place the PCS red

line of A view at the first echo peak of the calibration echo. Take Fig. 1-45 as an

example. If RefPt is set to 0, place the PCS red line on the first peak of the LW.

Fig. 1-45 PCS red line placement

31
4) Click CalibPCS, the "PCS" value is updated. If the error between the updated

"PCS" value and the old "PCS" value is within the allowable range, see Fig. 1-46,

then CalibPCS is completed. If the error is greater than the allowable range,

then perform calibration again.

Fig. 1-46 CalibPCS finished

5) After completing the calibration, adjust Gain until the maximum amplitude of the

LW (lateral) reaches 40% -80% as the testing sensitivity. And move the

measuring gate to cover the LW alone.

1.5 Scan

After the calibration is finished, all channels need to be scanned as a whole on the scan

interface, and the parameters can be applied to field testing after verifying the accuracy of

the calibration results.

As shown in Fig. 1-47, enter the scan interface. Confirm that the encoder cable of the

crawler is well connected to the encoder port of the ultrasound module. Click to
start the scan.

32
Fig.1-47 Scanning screen

During the scanning process, the position and map of each channel are displayed as

shown in Fig. 1-48.

Fig. 1-48 channel position and map display

Click to stop and the software will end the scan. Then click the File-Save menu, as
shown in Fig. 1-49, to save the record file.

33
Fig. 1-49 Saving file

1.6 CalibrationCheck

The CalibrationCheck function is used to check and calibrate the overall sensitivity of all

channels.

Note: Generally, the CalibrationCheck function is used in the following two

situations: 1) After the calibration of each channel is finished, perform

CalibrationCheck before applying it to the field testing. 2) After the field testing for a

period of time, perform the sensitivity check again in accordance with the standard.

1.6.1 Fusion

The FusionCalibrationCheck steps are as follows:
