One who has a little faith in Bhagavad-gita should learn Bhagavad-gita from a devotee,
because in the beginning of the Fourth Chapter it is stated clearly that Bhagavad-gita can
be understood only by devotees; no one else can perfectly understand the purpose of
Bhagavad-gita. One should therefore learn Bhagavad-gita from a devotee of Krishna, not
from mental speculators. This is a sign of faith. When one searches for a devotee and
finally gets a devotee's association one actually begins to study and understand
Bhagavad-gita. By advancement in the association of the devotee one is placed in
devotional service, and this service dispels all one's misgivings about Krishna, or God,
and Krishna's activities, form, pastimes, name and other features. After these misgivings
have been perfectly cleared away, one becomes fixed in one's study. Then one relishes
the study of Bhagavad-gita and attains the state of feeling always Krishna conscious. In
the advanced stage, one falls completely in love with Krishna. This highest perfectional
stage of life enables the devotee to be transferred to Krishna's abode in the spiritual sky,
Goloka Vrndavana, where the devotee becomes eternally happy.
(Bhagavad-gita As It Is: Chapter 8, Text 28 :Purport)
Srila Prabhupada’s desire that sastra degrees be awarded after systematic study of his
books is the driving force behind the Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture
(BCEC).
The Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture was founded in July 1991 in
Durban, South Africa by Brhat-mrdanga Dasa, under the guidance and blessings of the
Governing Body Commissioners and National Council of South Africa.
Brhat-mrdanga Dasa, a former school teacher joined ISKCON over 14 years ago in
Durban, South Africa. He lectured extensively on the balances between spiritual and
material education to secondary school and university students from 1986 to 1989,
distributing in excess of 30 000 books in this period. He simultaneously served as
Chairman of the ISKCON Durban Congregational Council and Temple Vice President.
He envisioned an institute that would facilitate the systematic study of Vedic literature
and philosophy as presented by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupada.
In 1988, His Holiness Giriraj Swami, Brhat-mrdanga Dasa's spiritual master instructed
him to test those students to whom he distributed books. He prepared himself by
attending the first Preacher Training Course at the Vrindavan Institute for Higher
Education (VIHE) in Vrindavan, India from July 1990 to May 1991. Upon returning to
South Africa he launched the Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture in July
1991. Besides overseeing the activities of the College globally, Brhat-mrdanga Dasa
presently serves as the President of ISKCON Durban (KwaZulu Natal).
Since Krishna consciousness is meant to expand more amongst the congregation than
within the temples, BCEC mainly goes out to the people. Classes are held in halls,
public schools, private homes, ISKCON Centres, and even outdoors. These classes are
advertised in our local Nama Hatta News, in our Journal which is distributed to the
congregation and other institutions(schools, public libraries, etc.), in the local press and
local radio as community news.
2. Duration of Classes
To suit part-time students, classes normally take place weekly in the evenings for one-
and-a-half hours. Higher studies usually take place for three hours on the weekends. This
convenient format attracts people from various backgrounds - lawyers, doctors, teachers,
businessmen, housewives - to study Srila Prabhupada's books and gradually leads them
to practice Krishna consciousness.
The College began in 1991 with only 2 lecturers and 48 students. Selected students then
enrolled for the Teacher/Lecturer Certification Course and became lecturers. Lecturers
were then encouraged to start classes in their areas. As their students advanced in Krishna
consciousness and met the requirements, they were also encouraged to begin classes in
their areas. In this way the program expanded. By the end of 1995, BCEC had 27
lecturers and a grand total of 1327 students.

Bhagavad-gita is called the king of education because it is the essence of all doctrines
and philosophies explained before. Among the principal philosophers in India are
Gautama, Kanada, Kapila, Yajnavalkya, Sandilya and Vaisvanara. And finally there is
Vyasadeva, the author of the Vedanta-sutra. So there is no dearth of knowledge in the
field of philosophy or transcendental knowledge. Now the Lord says that this Ninth
Chapter is the king of all such knowledge, the essence of all knowledge that can be
derived from the study of the Vedas and different kinds of philosophy. It is the most
confidential because confidential or transcendental knowledge involves understanding
the difference between the soul and the body. And the king of all confidential knowledge
culminates in devotional service. (Bhagavad-gita As It Is: Chapter 9, Text 2:Purport)

Imagine an army of trained brahminically qualified congregation members, stretching
around the globe, that systematically presents the science of Krishna consciousness year-
round to their peers. Imagine that the instruction and training for the "army of teachers"
was so effective that the "army" increased many times over, year after year after year.
Imagine maintaining that effort in a quality way for 25 years. Wouldn’t ISKCON
become more effective at improving the quality of life in accordance with our mission of
respiritualization of the world's population?
My experience of the Bhaktivedanta College's two week visit to New York has
convinced me that the vision of congregation members training others in the essentials of
Krsna conscious life can be done mass-scale. The effectiveness of this particular
program vastly exceeded my expectations.
My advice is for each center or temple to take this up locally. And watch our movement
grow, globally!!

Dear devotees and students,
Caitanya-carit€mta says:

"Men become strong and stout by eating sufficient grains, but the devotee who simply
eats ordinary grains but does not taste the transcendental pastimes of Lord Caitanya
Mahaprabhu and
Krishna gradually becomes weak and falls down from the transcendental position.
However, if one drinks but a drop of the nectar of Krishna's pastimes, his body and mind
begin to bloom, and he begins to laugh, sing and dance." (Cc. Madhya L…l€ 25.278)
In his purport Srila Prabhupada says: "All the devotees connected with this Krishna
consciousness movement must read all the books that have been translated (Caitanya-
carit€mta, ®r…mad-Bh€gavatam, Bhagavad-g…t€ and others); otherwise, after some
time, they will simply eat, sleep and fall down from their position. Thus they will miss
the opportunity to attain an eternal, blissful life of transcendental pleasure."

"In this world, there is nothing so sublime and pure as transcendental knowledge. Such
knowledge is the mature fruit of all mysticism. And one who has become accomplished
in the practice of devotional service enjoys this knowledge within himself in due course
of time." (Bg. 4.38)
The Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture is one of the most important
branches of ISKCON, as it is providing all the devotees with the opportunity to become
firmly fixed in spiritual knowledge. Please continue to take advantage of this facility.
Hoping this meets you well.
Your servant,
My advice is for each center or temple to take this up locally. And watch our movement
grow, globally!!
Srila Prabhupada established ISKCON “to systematically propagate spiritual knowledge
to the society at large and to educate all people in the techniques of spiritual life in order
to check the imbalance of values in life , and to achieve real unity and peace in the
world”. Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture has made this noble aim of
ISKCON its central theme. ‘Bhakti’ means devotion and ‘Vedanta’ means the conclusive
truth. Unlike speculative knowledge without devotion, knowledge fortified with
devotion is the means to understand the Absolute Truth.
I would like to request all those who participate to realise how rare this experience is and
take it very seriously.
The structure of the programme and the type of devotees participating in teaching and
administration is overwhelming. Bhaktivedanta College students and teachers will
definitely be leaders in Krishna conscious communities around the world.

Bhaktivedanta College
Rasikananda Dasa conducts a Bhakti-sadacara class in Washington DC, USA
Honorable Minister Kadress R.C. Pillay
Dear devotees and students,
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness is contributing greatly in the field of
spiritual knowledge based on the teachings of His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedanta
Swami Prabhupada.
These teachings have been able to mould the life of millions of people all over the world.
Since October 1995, ISKCON Mauritius has embarked on a very valuable project by
establishing the Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture in Mauritius, which
originated in South Africa.
The professionalism of the College and its well defined program are not its only merits.
In this Institution the teachers are fully trained, as well as follow the scriptural
injunctions of teaching by their own examples.
I would like to request all those who participate to realise how rare this experience is and
take it very seriously.
The structure of the programme and the type of devotees participating in teaching and
administration is overwhelming. Bhaktivedanta College students and teachers will
definitely be leaders in Krishna conscious communities around the world.
