ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II (ARCH 232) Spring 2023

DUPLEX VILLA IN A RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

Assignment 1
Design standards and Case Studies

To be able to start the concept design stage, students should be divided into groups of 2-
3 students in each group. The groups are required to cover the following parts of the
pre-design stage.

1. Traditional Building Design:

The functional and spatial requirements of residential buildings should include:
o Building number of floors / member capacity.
o Primary functional components.
o Heights (or space to height ratio)
o Building accessibility and circulation.
o Spatial arrangement of functional components to each other (Indoor/ Outdoor).
o Openings details (sizes and position in relation to the space)
** Consider the Privacy / Culture Impact on the building design and layout.

2. General Architectural Standards and guidelines:

The Standards / Guidelines for the residential building (Villas), should include all spatial
requirements (area in SQM’s) to maintain 5 members with a land average size of 300 m2. Spaces
include and not Limited to the following:

 Reception
 Master bedroom
 Living rooms  Two bedrooms for children
 Dinning room  Playroom
 Kitchen  Office
 Store  Maid room with toilet
Students are asked to conduct comprehensive research on the design standards and
considerations for these spaces, their supporting units, and any related functional spaces in terms
of required spaces numbers, dimensions, areas, furniture, orientation …. etc.
You are expected to review different learning resources (e.g., Neufert, Timesaver for Architectural
design, Timesaver for Landscape, and other related references including online journal articles)

The architectural standards and guidelines should include all spatial requirements (in SQM’s) from
related Architectural Standards references.

3. Case Studies analysis:

The main purpose of case study analysis is to help students understand the various aspects that they have to
consider while designing their projects through real cases. Additionally, it enables them to develop
generative strategies and source of knowledge that can later apprise their architectural design.

Students are expected to conduct 2 relevant case studies with their analysis of residential units. The
selected case studies should be:

• One local/regional case study in Saudi Arabia.

• One international case study.

Standards for Case Study Analysis:

Each case study must be analyzed based on the points below:
1. Brief (general project information).
2. Concept statement: form composition and form articulation.
3. Architectural style and aesthetic factors.

4. Site analysis, including:
a. Contextual analysis (relationship of the house to its context).
b. Climate analysis.
c. Accessibility (Surrounding roads).

5. Program analysis, including:

a. Main zones.
b. Program elements including areas analysis.
c. Vertical relationships (double/ heights, views in sections).
d. Circulation diagram (horizontal and vertical), representing the circulation paths, stairs, elevator shafts “if
any”, lobbies and corridors.
6. Structural system
7. Environmental treatment/issues
8. Conclusion / case

Submission Requirements
The assignment will be presented as a Power Point Presentation (15-20 minutes presentation)
Due date: Tuesday 9 February 2023

Grade: 10 points

Notes
o The presentation should include technical drawings, diagrams / analysis / References.
