SUMMARY OF THE WEEK

The area comes under research and development where the research about all the basic components of the tractor is
studied and how these components work and what role do they play in the efficient functioning of the machine.
Components like: Radiator, Type of Filters, Electric components like starter motor and Alternator.
The type of air filter used in tractors are both dry and wet air filters unlike in normal cars where only a dry filter is
used. Tractors require both type of filters as it works in rural and field areas, so the air filter doesn’t work much
better than a wet one. The dust particles settle down in wet air filter which gives better performance of the machine
in the field.
performance in the field. Most dry, or non-oiled, filter elements are made up of several layers of paper, although
some people in the market do use a cotton gauze fabric. These filters are generally capable to trap dirt particles
down to less than ten microns in size. Wet or oiled the air filter is made up of a few layers of cotton gauze coated
with a slight amount of oil because the oil acts as a sticky dirt-trap. The openings in the filter material can be
slightly larger than those in a paper filter which makes this type of filter slightly less restrictive.

Starter motor: -Gained knowledge of starter motor and its sub-components-Armature coil, commutator, bushes,
solenoids, plunger, lever fork, pinion, and field coil. Working of this component is quite simple and plays a very
important role in the automotive sector. It helps in starting up the engine as in when we turn the key in the car’s
ignition the engine turns over and cranks. The starter motor is responsible for turning the engine over during
ignition and allowing it to create a suction and to suck in air. On the engine, a flywheel with a ring gear is attached
around the edge, is fitted to the end of the crankshaft. On the starter, the pinion is designed to fit into the
groover of the ring gear. When you turn the ignition switch, the electromagnet inside the body engages which
pushes out a rod to which the pinion is attached. The pinion meets the flywheel and the starter motor turn on.
Parts of Starter Motor
Armature:
An armature is an electromagnet component that is mounted on the driveshaft or bearings for a guide. It is made of
a laminated soft iron core which is wrapped with numerous conductor loops or windings.

Commutator:
A commutator is a section of the shaft at the rear of the housing on which brushes run to conduct electricity. It is
made of two plates mounted to the axle of the armature; the plates provide connections for the coil of the
electromagnet.

Brushes:
Brushes are parts that run on a section of the commutator at the rear of the housing. it rubs the commutator and
conducts electricity.

Solenoid:
The solenoid features two coils of wire that are wrapped around the core. This solenoid serves as a switch that
connects and close the electrical connection between the starter motor and the vehicle’s battery.

Plunger:
The function of a plunger in a starter motor is to push forward so the pinion can be engaged.

Lever Fork:
The lever fork is connected to the plunger which makes them push forward together to engage the pinion.

Pinion:
A pinion is a small mechanism containing gear and springs. It engages immediately the engine started, by
extending the gear to the flywheel teeth. The flywheel is the source of engine rotation.

Field Coils:
The field coils are held in housing with screws as it consists of two or more coils connected in series. These coils
receive power from the battery that converts them into an electromagnet that turns the armature. This creates a
magnetic field around the armature.
