1. Molybdenum (Mo) crystallizes in a body-centered cubic lattice. The density of Mo is 10.2 g cm-3.
a. Calculate the unit-cell-edge length in pm. (3 points)
b. Calculate a value for the metallic radius of molybdenum in pm (The atomic mass of molybdenum is 95.94
g mol-1. (2 points)
2. Magnesium metal is very close to being a hexagonal close-packed array of atoms. X-ray studies show
that the Mg-Mg distance is 3.203 Å. Calculate a value for the density for metallic magnesium. The molar
mass of Mg is 24.305 g mol-1. (5 points)
3. The ionic radii (for C.N. = 6) for Cs+ and I- are 1.81 Å and 2.06 Å, respectively.
a. Using radius ratios as an aid to your thinking, predict the cell lattice type of CsI. (1 point)
b. How many Cs+ and I- ion are in the unit cell? Show a calculation as part of your answer. (2 points)
c. Assuming your unit cell to be correct, calculate a value for density of CsI. The molar mass of Cs and I
are 133 g mol-1 and 127 g mol-1, respectively.
(3 points)
4. Magnesium oxide (MgO) has a NaCl type crystal structure. The ionic radii of Mg2+ and O2- ions are 0.86
Å and 1.26 Å, respectively. The molar mass of Mg and O are 24.305 g mol-1 and 15.999 g mol-1, respectively.
