Preparatory Exercises

Use the mirror to check the position of the articulators

I. For the jaws

1. a) - Close the mouth, press the lips together.


- Drop the lower jaw as low as possible
- Close the mouth
b) Pronounce [æ]

2. a) - Keep the mouth closed


- Half-open the mouth
- Drop the lower jaw to its lowest position
b) Pronounce [i:] – [e] – [æ]

II. For the lips

1. a) - Set the jaws slightly apart


- Spread the lips to expose the upper and lower teeth
b) Pronounce [i:]

2. a) - Spread the lips to expose the upper and lower teeth


- Move the lower jaw downward and upward. (Open and close the mouth)
b) Pronounce [i:] – [æ]

3. a) - Raise the upper lip to expose the upper teeth


- Lower the lower lip to expose the lower teeth
- Raise the lower lip and bite it with the upper teeth
(Caution: Do not move the upper lip)
b) Pronounce [v]

4. a) - Protrude the lips


- Blow the air out without making a noise
b) Pronounce [w]

5. a) - Spread the lips to expose the upper and lower teeth (See ex.1)
- Protrude the lips (See ex.4)
b) Pronounce [i:] – [w]

6. a) - Spread the lips to expose the upper and low teeth (See ex.1)
- Set the jaws slightly apart
- Move the corners of the lips to the center to form a round opening
(Caution: do not protrude the lips)
b) Pronounce [i:] – [u]

7. a) - Spread the lips


- Make them neutral
- Round them
b) Pronounce [i:]-[i] – [u]-[u:]
III For the tongue

1. a) - Spread the lips to expose the upper and lower teeth


- Lower the lower jaw just a little
- Squeeze the flattened tongue between the teeth
(Caution: the tongue does not touch the lips)
b) Pronounce [ð] – [θ]

2. - Spread the lips to expose the upper and lower teeth


- Lower the lower jaw
- Put the pointed tongue out, directing it forward or upward

3. a) - Put the tip of the tongue to the inside of the upper teeth, feel the slit between the
cutters
- Bring the tip of the tongue to the teethridge
- Move the tip of the tongue backward, feel the hard palate and try to touch the
uvula
- Move the tongue to the initial position
b) Pronounce [ð]-[z]-[r]-[°] [°]-[r]-[z]-[ð]

4. a) - Place the tip of the tongue to the gum of the lower teeth (dorsal position)
- Bring the tip of the tongue to the alveoli (apical position)
b) Pronounce Ukrainian and English counterparts [т] – [t], [д] – [d], [c] – [s],
[н] – [n], [л] – [l]
