Meningitis
Filed Under: Brain and Nerves, Infections and Contagious Diseases

What is meningitis?

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes that surround the brain. There are three meninges, including the following:

dura mater - the outside membrane that adheres to the inside of the skull. arachnoid - the middle membrane. pia mater - the innermost membrane, which adheres to the brain.

What causes meningitis?

There are two distinct types of meningitis, each with different causes: viral - caused by a virus Viral meningitis is more common than bacterial meningitis, although rarely life threatening. Viral meningitis can be caused by different viruses, and is spread between people by coughing or sneezing, or through poor hygiene. Other germs can be found in sewage polluted water. Viral meningitis cannot be helped by antibiotics. Recovery is normally complete, but headaches, fatigue, and depression may persist. Bacterial meningitis, although rare, may be fatal. Bacteria may be spread through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions, such as coughing and kissing, but they cannot live outside the body for long. They cannot be picked up from water supplies, swimming pools, buildings, etc. Many species of bacteria can cause meningitis. Below are four types:

bacterial caused by a bacterium

neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus) Meningococcus is common in children two to 18 years of age, and 2,600 cases are reported annually in the U.S. It is spread by respiratory droplets and close contact. For unknown reasons, only a small fraction of carriers develop meningitis. Meningococcal meningitis occurs most often in the first year of life, but may also occur in closed populations, such as schools. streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) Pneumococcus is the most common and most serious form of bacterial meningitis, and accounts for 6,000 cases annually in the U.S. Those at high risk may include persons with weakened immune systems. Haemophilus influenzae b The development of the Haemophilus influenzae b vaccine has drastically decreased the number of cases in the U.S. Children who do not have access to the vaccine and those in day-care centers are at high risk of acquiring Haemophilus meningitis. Listeria monocytogenes Listeria monocytogenes has become a more frequent cause of meningitis in neonates, pregnant women, persons over the age of 60, and in persons of all ages who are immunocompromised.

How does the infection reach the brain?

The infection can reach the brain via several different routes, including through the bloodstream from another infected part of the body, through the bones of the skull from infected sinuses or inner ears, or from a head injury, such as a fractured skull or penetrating wound. In particular, this occurs when the body's resistance is compromised by certain factors such as following surgery or an extended hospitalization, a weakened immune system, or as a result of chronic kidney failure.

What are the symptoms of meningitis?

The following are the most common symptoms of meningitis. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

fever headache nausea and vomiting stiff neck photophobia (low tolerance to bright light) confusion joint aches or pains drowsiness seizures fever high-pitched cry pale, blotchy skin color not wanting to eat vomiting fretful and fussy arching back difficult to wake Previous 1 2 Next

Symptoms for children may also include:

Re: fungal meningitis

the body hosts lots of fungi - the problem is when the fungi get out of control. See a GOOD Ears/Nose/Throat doc, and ask for a culture to confirm the diagnosis. They are very hard to confirm, by the way, even if you DO have a fungal infection. There are two drugs that I've taken that have each had pretty significant impacts on my fungi - sporonox and lamisil. (Lamasil?) You have to take them carefully - and they can cause liver damage so you will need a liver function test before you take the drug. But I thought I felt better after I took them and had reduced symptoms. Reply With Quote 3. Re: fungal meningitis

My Dad was diagnosed with fungal meningitis almost 18 months ago. The surgeons have place a shunt to try to release pressure, but it keeps growing fungus inside and getting blocked. They cannot grow a culture from the fungus or any of the pieces of brain taken for testing. He is now in a serious condition in hospital. Has anyone had a similar experience -- advice on experts (anywhere in the world) for a second opinion, advise on drugs, etc. All we are told is 'no-one knows', which is why I'm trying to find out anything I can. Thank you. Reply With Quote

Re: fungal meningitis

Grace&Benny - I see you are in Australia. For a natural care approach, if interested, please access Dr. Angela Hywood. Not exactly where she is located, as I am not too familiar with your geography. One possible way may be to web search for MediHerb and have them give you her address. The founder of MediHerb, Kerry Bone, may also be able to give you some advice as it seems the drug approach is not working. I have had the good fortune to study at seminars given by the above natural health pros and have been impressed with both. Hope this may help. Reply With Quote 5. Understanding Meningitis -- the Basics

What Is Meningitis?
Meningitis is inflammation of the delicate membranes -- called meninges (men-in'-jeez) -- that cover the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis is usually caused by infection from viruses or bacteria.

Bacterial meningitis can be serious and deadly. Viral meningitis tends to be less severe, and most people recover completely. Fungal meningitis is a rare form and generally occurs in people with weakened immune systems. Meningitis can also be due to non-infectious causes, such as cancer or medications.

What Causes Meningitis?

Meningitis is almost always caused by a bacterial or viral infection that began elsewhere in the body, such as in the ears, sinuses, or upper respiratory tract. Less common causes of meningitis include fungal infection, autoimmune disorders, and medications. Bacterial Meningitis Bacterial meningitis is an extremely serious illness that requires immediate medical care. If not treated quickly, it can lead to death within hours -- or lead to permanent damage to the brain and other parts of the body. Bacterial meningitis is caused by any one of several bacteria. Neisseria meningitidis or "meningococcus" is common in children and young adults, and Streptococcuspneumoniae or "pneumococcus" is another common cause in children and adults. Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) was a common cause of meningitis in infants and young children until the Hib vaccine was introduced for infants. Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae account for about most of the bacterial meningitis cases in the U.S. Vaccines are available for both Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The bacteria can spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. If you are around someone who has bacterial meningitis, contact your doctor to ask what steps you need to take so you don't become infected. In many instances, bacterial meningitis develops when bacteria get into the bloodstream from the sinuses, ears, or other part of the upper respiratory tract. The bacteria then travel through the bloodstream to the brain. Viral Meningitis

Viral meningitis is more common than the bacterial form and generally -- but not always -- less serious. It can be triggered by a number of viruses, including several that can cause diarrhea. People with viral meningitis are much less likely to have permanent brain damage after the infection resolves. Most will recover completely. Fungal Meningitis Fungal meningitis is much less common than the other two infectious forms. Fungus-related meningitis is rare in healthy people. However, someone who has an impaired immune system is more likely to become infected with this form of meningitis. Further Reading:
