NCSTP-ROTC Bill's Toll to the Well-being of Students

NSTP and ROTC in the old curriculum was mandatory but students have the will to choose their own.
Meanwhile, in the new "House Bill (HB) 6687, which would mandate a National Citizens Service Training
Service Program (NCSTP) in higher education institutions, as well as making Reserve Officers’ Training
Corps (ROTC)" it became mandatory. Many students opposed to the said bill according to the Inquirer's
report.

Implementing this would affect the both physical and mental health of the students. It should not be
mandatory. There are several effects of this to the physical health, not everyone will be physically able
to perform in the ROTC and there are times where the handlers of the ROTC keep on pushing the limits
of the students that lead to the exhaustion of their body and to support this, just look into the story of
Mark Welson Chua of University of Santo Tomas that died because of the Reserve Officers Training
Corps. Also, it can be a tool of the violation of human rights considering on what happened to Mark
Chua in 2001 and Willy Amihoy in 2019. Also, because of what happened to Willy Amihoy, before his
death, ROTC first take toll on his mental health because of the abuse he experienced during the training
and also the hardship it gave. So, mandating this bill could possibly harm the students it must be
stopped.
