Chapter I

Introduction

Background and Theoretical Framework of the Study

Environmental management refers to the management of the interaction and impact of

human activities on the natural environment also it is a purposeful activity with the goal to

maintain and improve the state of an environmental resource affected by human interactions.

Environmental issues are becoming more serious and dangerous. Many environmental

problems are surrounding people in everyday life, which people don’t know about or they never

paid attention for it. Environmental Management offers research on use and conservation of

natural resources, protection of habitat and control of hazards. Spanning the field of

environmental management without regard to traditional disciplinary boundaries. Humanity is

responsible for ensuring that its environmental impacts are benign rather than catastrophic.

(Anarfi, 2009).

Before the environment got damaged by the hands of mankind, the lands are full of

growing trees, unseen plastic to our beloved sea, beautiful sky that glistens to our eyes. In the

past, mankind helped each other to maintain the beauty of the environment. Full grown trees,

fresh air, the clean and vast sea, balance of weather and the unity of mankind. There is a huge

difference between the environment today and the past.

The need to study the environmental management is an important perspective in the

current scenario. Environmental stress is becoming severe day by day. Degradation of

environmental poses a serious threat to humanity. For use of resources are limited, appropriately

and reasonable use of resources, environmental management is necessary. Environmental

management is required for sustainable development without destruction or overuse of natural

resources and to reduce pollution and degradation of nature. For economic need and values is

required to give new directions and at the same time to maintain clean environment.

This study is anchored at the theory of disposal of hazardous wastes creates major

economic and environmental problems for both developed and developing nations. (Linderman,

2003) Management of the environment is a critical role component for any health care provider.

Turmoil, multiple relationships, and new ways of “doing business” characterize today’s health

care system, and traditional management techniques based on Newtonian Physics may no longer

be effective. (Valadez et al 1999).

This study focuses on the Level of Environmental Management among Grade 12

Senior High School Students and important needs for suitable environment friendly practices

among the students towards optional use of resources so as to develop the sense of responsibility

towards eco development and sustainability.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

In order to determine the data and information to be authentic and legitimate, the

correlation of the level of environmental management among senior high school students of Iloilo

City National High School SY 2019-2020 will be confirmed and validated with the following

precursor studies that were conducted and gathered information from different locations both

local and foreign in varying degrees of interpretation and different methods of data gathering and

methodology which have a definite relation and resemblance that can aid in the development of

researcher’s current study.

Solid Waste Management – Case Study

This study confirms that the maximum proportion of refuse caused by food and garden

wastes, proportion of the reuse caused by food and garden wastes, second highest was paper and

the third highest was inert material. Percentage of plastic carry bags was higher, where glass,

ceramic and metals were nearly equal with each other.

The Impacts of Water Conservation Strategies on Water Use: Four Case Studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of four water conservation pilot strategies on water

use. As is inherent to many small-scale pilots, the datasets for these demonstration projects tend

to be small, variable, and exhibit non-normal distributions and demonstrate the application of

mostly nonparametric statistical methods for their ability to enable sensible inferences to be

drawn, in some cases, even from the very small samples.

The Economic Benefits of Recycling in Virginia

This study confirms urban and highly populated areas are not only more likely to recycle,

but along with low income localities, they are able to use available funding most efficiently due

to the presence of economies of scale. While state dollars usually result in higher recycling

performance, the relationship between local budget and recycling performance is less clear.

CDM Afforestation and Reforestation Project Activities

This study shows importance to better our understanding of local people's socioeconomic

matters. Conservation of endangered species and primary vegetation species and the problem of

alien species, including GMOs, will be major challenges. Good understanding will allow

accurate predictions of CDM afforestation and reforestation project's socioeconomic impacts on

local people, minimize leakage with fair management systems, and help projects succeed.

Environmental Management Practices

This study shows a wide variety of EMPs exists and that practices can be found at

multiple levels of the firm and discusses if a more comprehensive approach integrating the

practices at all levels compared with an approach that focuses on a single practice or a single

level of practices. EMPs are multi-dimensional and include tactical, operational, and strategic

activities. (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/263569481)

How to Dispose of Waste

According to Gorilla Bins’ blog proper waste management is important to avoid

contamination, especially when the waste is hazardous. But more importantly, households and

businesses should exercise waste minimization or waste avoidance, which involves recycling old

items, repair items, donating items no longer in use, avoiding the use of disposable items, etc. to

reduce the amount of waste that will end up in landfills. (https://gorillabins.ca/blog/2016/12/)

Benefits of Water Conservation Why We Should Care About Saving Water

Water conservation means using our limited water supply wisely and caring for it

properly. Since each of us depends on water to sustain life, it is our responsibility to learn more

about water conservation and how we can help keep our sources pure and safe for generations to

come. It minimizes the effects of drought and water shortages. It guards against rising costs and

political conflict. It helps to preserve our environment. It makes water available for recreational

purposes. It builds safe and beautiful communities.

What are the benefits of Recycling?

Landfills are ill-equipped to handle the amount of trash dumped each year. For this

reason, overflow is sent to incinerators. Certain waste releases toxic chemicals into the air when

burned, wreaking havoc on the environment. Recycling also decreases our dependence on natural

resources like certain minerals, water and wood, of which there is a finite supply. Oil can be

recycled countless times. If we chose not to recycle oil, we would need to consume it at a much

higher rate in order to support the economy. Since recycling reduces the carbon footprint of

industrialization via reduction and reuse of materials already in circulation, it is also effective in
14

the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions created by manufacturers. (Residential Waste Systems,

2013)

Implications for Reforestation and Land Restoration

Tropical forests provide a variety of goods and services to humanity. Although efforts to

protect and manage these forests have increased in recent decades, forest loss continues.

Advances in knowledge have led to increasingly sophisticated reforestation treatments as well as

novel ways of deriving goods and services from human dominated landscapes.

Environmental Management

Environmental management is not easy to define. As Barrow (2005) has acknowledged, it

can refer to a goal or vision, to attempts to steer a process, to the application of a set of tools, to a

philosophical exercise seeking to establish new perspectives towards the environment and human

societies, and to much more besides. Indeed, environmental management involves all people to

some extent because all human activities ultimately have some sort of environmental impact.

However, some individuals are more directly involved with resource use, and some special

interest groups are particularly concerned with resource exploitation and with issues related to

pollution. Environmental management therefore involves many stakeholders and requires a

multidisciplinary perspective. It involves many spatial scales, ranging from the local to the

global. It also involves many, diverse goals, including the desires to control the direction and

pace of development, to optimize resource use, to minimize environmental degradation and to

avoid environmental disaster. (https://www.soas.ac.uk/cedep-demos/000_P500_ESM_K3736-

Summary

The following related literature and related studies shows the level of environmental

management among senior high school students in Iloilo City National High School in which the

article written by Barrow (2005) environmental management involves all the people to some

extent because all human activities ultimately have some sort of environmental impact. People

nowadays, neglect the very essence of nature and their surroundings. They continue to abuse and

disrupt the balance of nature, hoarding countless resources, throwing unsegregated rubbishes, do

deforestation in various forests across the globe and many more. By reviewing numerous studies

and literature, such as How to Dispose of Waste, Benefits of Water Conservation Why We

Should Care about Saving Water, What are the benefits of Recycling? And Implications for

Reforestation and Land Restoration we learned the benefits of some aspect of environmental

management and that there are some ways to help bring nature to its rich and glorious past self in

the heeding to the issue of waste management, water conservation, reforestation and recycling.

Furthermore, there are studies like Solid Waste Management – Case Study, The Impacts

of Water Conservation Strategies on Water Use: Four Case Studies, The Economic Benefits of

Recycling in Virginia and CDM Afforestation and Reforestation Project Activities shows the
16
Department of Education
Region VI – Western Visayas
Schools Division of Iloilo City

various human practices and activities that helps the environment in certain places around the

world and concluded that there are actions that promotes good results to the environment and

there are some abolishes the nature. Thus, we humans are must aware of our actions because it

reflects not only ourselves and we must face our consequences that follows.

Conclusion

Therefore the researcher have made a conclusion that the studies gathered have almost

equal division to which five out of the ten review related literature and studies have made results

that indicate a positive correlation between level of environmental management, while the two

out of ten results are negative and three out of ten are inconclusive therefore from the data given

it is established that there is a certain degree of relationship between the level of environmental

management but the parameters and ways to describe and gauge the state and status of that said

relationship; whether positive or negative remained inconclusive and debated thus further

analysis and research is needed to attain a definite conclusion.
