Subject matter : Painting by Paul Cezanne
Paul Cézanne’s energetic, distorted paintings and drawings helped pave the way for
modernism and 20th-century art at large. Across radiant landscapes, intense portraits, and
complex still lifes, the Post-Impressionist perfected a style that used vivid color palettes and
sensitively layered brushstrokes of varying thicknesses to create a sense of dimension across
the picture plane.
I like the background atmosphere that shows harmony by using a variety of colors such as
primary, secondary, testier and neutral colors. The bright colors of the table made me
interested in how Paul balances his canvas by by combining different color
temperatures well. I am also very interested in the meticulousness of the canva that
emphasizes the details of structure, color, shape and style in the canva. I also like the painting
of apples on the table which makes the dining table more cheerful and not so empty.
The atmosphere in the painting evoked some rather strong emotions in me. When I paint, I
can feel depression and how Paul Cezanne struggled with his failures. Cezanne's goal, in his
own mind, was never fully achieved. He left most of his works unfinished and destroyed
others. He complained about his failure to make human figures, and indeed great figure
works in his later years - such as the Large Bathers.
The next generation of painters, however, eventually accepted almost all of Cezanne's
eccentricities. Cezanne's heirs felt that the naturalistic painting of Impressionism had been
formulated, and that a new and original style, however difficult, was needed to restore a sense
of sincerity and commitment to modern art.
When I colored this canva, it reminded me of the quote about Paul Cezanne, "Success is not
final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston S. Churchill
