Study Guideline
• The lecture notes will be a good guide to the
material throughout the course.
• Attending the lecture is necessary to pass this
paper.
• Problems discussed during the tutorial will be
really helpful for your final examination.
• Most of the work in understanding this course
must be done by students in their own time
• Try out many problems is the only way of finding
out to see if you really understand the material.

Laboratory Experiments
• Laboratory- WS 421
• Lab experiments are compulsory.
• You must come to the assigned lab session according to
your Lab Group Number.
• You are not allowed to go to any other lab session other
than your allocated lab session.
• At the end of the lab you need to sign the attendance
sheet.
• Lab experiments are broken up into three sections.
– Part 1- Theory behind the experiment
– Part 2- Short written pre-test
– Part 3-A description of the lab experiment and the
procedure

Professor Peter Chong - Department of EEE, AUT 12

Lab Assessment
• Before the lab
– Complete Lab Pre-test
• During the lab
– Record the results/observations of the lab
experiments in a paper sheet.
– Write a 1-page lab report based on the questions
from the Teaching Assistant (TA)
• End of the lab
– Submit 1) lab pre-test, 2) Lab results and 3) lab report
to the TA
• Note:
– Further instructions about lab procedures will be given in
the lab sessions.
– Bring scientific calculator

Basic Units
• To work in an electrical lab you must be able
to use the basic electrical equipment and deal
with the basic units.

• Voltage (The Volt; V)

• Current (The Ampere; A)
• Resistance (The Ohm; Ω)
• Power (The Watt; W)
Professor Peter Chong - Department of EEE, AUT 20
Voltage - volts (V)
• Change in energy (J) per unit charge (C)as a
electric charge passes through a circuit from one
point to the other
• Volts=Joules/Coulomb
• The units of voltage are volts (V). 1V = 1J/C.
• Voltage measured between two points

voltmeter V Parallel to the DUT
(Device under test)

Professor Peter Chong - Department of EEE, AUT 21

Current- amperes (A)
• Current is a measure of how many charges
(C) passing a point per second (s).
• The units of current are amperes (A).
• 1A = 1C/s
• To measure ampere we must break into the
circuit and insert the ammeter

battery Through a point

Series to the DUT

Professor Peter Chong - Department of EEE, AUT 22
Resistance- Ohms (Ω)
• Resistance is a measure of how much voltage
is required to drive one amp about a circuit.
• Ohms Law R= V/I
• Ohms are measured with an ohmmeter, Ω,
with all other supplies disconnected.

ohmmeter Ω resistor

Professor Peter Chong - Department of EEE, AUT 23

Power – watts (W)
• Power (W) is a measure of how much energy (J)is
transferred into the circuit each second (s)
• Power is related to current and voltage through
Energy( Joules ) Charge(Coloumb) Energy( Joules )
Power = VI = =
Charge(Coloumb) Time( Seconds) Time( Seconds)

Energy (J) = Power (W) x Time (s)

• Energy-the ability to do work
• Power- how fast work can be done
