    Seventh Chords

    Creating Seventh Chords by combining two triads

    Major Seventh Chords


    Play a Major triad in the left hand, then play a Minor triad in the right hand
    the distance a major 3rd from the root of the triad in the left hand.

    Example:

    Left Hand Right Hand


    CEG E G B

    Notice the distance between the C of left hand and the E of the right hand
    is an interval of a major 3rd.

    So, the formula for Major Seventh chords is:

    Major Triad + Minor Triad (separated by major 3rd) = Major Seventh

    Minor Seventh Chords
    Play a Minor triad in the left hand, then play a Major triad in the right hand
    the distance of a minor 3rd from the root of the triad in the left hand.

    Example:

    Left Hand Right Hand

    Notice the distance between the C of left hand and the Eb of the right
    hand is an interval of a minor 3rd.

    Notice the distance between the C of left hand and the Eb of the right

    So, the formula for Half Diminished Seventh chords is:

    Play an Augmented triad in the left hand, then play a Major triad in the
    right hand the distance of a major 3rd from the root of the triad in the left
    hand.

    an interval of a major 3rd.

    So, the formula for Augmented Major Seventh chords is:
