13
Pipeline – Downward pumping

• Use minimum of 20 meter. horizontal

line before the start of downward line to
ensure steady flow state of concrete
before entering downward line. P ump
T hrust Block
• Horizontal pipeline must be cast in a
Air Vent
thrust block to reduce the shocks
transmitted.
• Use thrust block or outside bracket
elbow at the bottom of downward line.
• Provide firm supporting to line going
downward. If possible provide standby
descending line which will be useful in
case of blockage of one line.
• Provide air vent/ bleeder valve at 90º
bend going down. This vent allows
air(displaced by concrete) to escape
out & also admits air to prevent a
siphoning effect.

14
Pipeline laying

Use camel hump/loop as shown in picture which will help to hold more concrete in
vertical delivery line & also will prevent the freefall & segregation of concrete in
descending line.

• Provide necessary thrust blocks for the pipeline to absorb the shocks developed while
pumping
• The immediate piping after pump must take U turn which ensures minimum shocks in
the pipeline
• Provide rigid & firm support to complete pipeline
• Ensure that the horizontal piping after the pump is at least 1/8th of total vertical pipeline.
This helps in maintaining minimum back pressure due to concrete in vertical pipeline.

Problems in pipelines

Narrowing of the diameter as a result of encrustation

Cause :

• Leaking pipelines
• Concrete with a high fines
content
• High pressures

Consequences :

• Increased pressure requirement

• Formation of a blockage

20
Laying delivery lines

Securing the delivery line

• Firm anchoring to the structure or the supporting ground
• At least 1 fixing point per pipe
• Absolute linearity
• Secured against axial slippage
• Web plate of beam in direction
of forces from pumping

blv 09/00 AKM 533 FN 21

21
Causes of blockages

Coarse particles become Water bleeds out

• Segregation and bleeding during
wedged
breaks in pumping
• Leaking couplings or kinked lines
in the coupling
• Insufficient cleaning of the delivery
line
• Accumulation of aggregate in the
concrete at the end of the
discharge
High frictional resistance

Conveying direction

Cleaning

3 possibilities:
• From the top downwards using compressed air
• From the top downwards using water
• From the bottom upwards using water

Cleaning material available

in different degree of
hardness

Calculate the concrete quantity in the line approximately 1.25 m³ per 100m at a
diameter of 125

26
Cleaning

Cleaning from the top downwards using compressed air

Apply the compressed air in short

bursts only and wait until the
concrete ceases to move.

Follow the course of the sponge

ball by knocking on the line

27
Cleaning

Cleaning from the top downwards using compressed air

• The force of gravity aids washing out
• Force the sponge ball back using a compressor
• Air cleaning must be carried out very carefully and is
dangerous. Do not clean hoses.
• Take care as the sponge balls are ejected from
the end of the line
